Goal Statement 100% of the students in this first grade classroom will increase their vocabulary score to their age equivalent or above, as measured by the vocabulary assessment Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT).
Student Population • The student population at this school is high poverty with over 80% free and reduced lunch students. There are also a high percentage of English language learners, nearly 30%. Twice a year the school administers the PPVT to kindergarten and first grade students, and generally a large number of students perform under their chronological age. It is not unusual for those same students to show little or no increase when they are re-tested at the end of the year.
Instructional Goal First grade learners will identify one picture that illustrates a given word, when given a choice of four pictures for the word, with a 90% success rate.
Performance Objectives • When given words, the first grade student will repeat each word. • When given a word the student will repeat the word in order to demonstrate if they heard the word correctly. • When given a word the first grade student will determine if the word is a word they are familiar with, and give a verbal definition of the word if known. • When given a word the student will ask themselves if they have ever heard this word before. • When given a word the student will ask themselves if they know what the word means, and if they do know what it means, they will give a definition of the word. • When given a word and four picture choices, the first grade student will determine if any of the pictures can be eliminated as possible matches to the given word, and cover any pictures that can be eliminated. • When given a word and four picture choices the student will determine if there are any of the picture choices that they know do not match the word, and will cover those pictures. • When given a word and four picture choices the student will determine if there are any of the picture choices that might match the word, and will point to the possible choices. • When given a word and four picture choices, the first grade student will make a choice about which picture illustrates the given word, and will determine if their choice makes sense. • When given a word and four pictures choices, the student will make a choice and then describe how the picture choice relates to the word.
Summary My goal was for each learner to increase their vocabulary assessment score, and that goal indeed was met. I believe that vocabulary instruction and acquisition should be on-going, not just a set of lessons, however, learning the skill of thinking, eliminating, and self-assessing will be great tools as they acquire additional vocabulary. I would like to continue to explore ways to increase student’s vocabulary while they are in my first grade classroom. While this instruction proved to be beneficial, I believe it can always be improved.
