  3. Ethnic Tensions • Plantations paid ethnic groups differently. • Why do this? • To keep them from unionizing. • Main tension: Caucasians vs. everyone else. • Seemed Caucasians got special treatment. • Only Caucasians could be doctors, lawyers, etc. • Examples: Fukunaga and Massie Case

  4. Miles Fukunaga • Nisei • Intelligent, aspired to be doctor. • B/c not Caucasian, couldn’t be • Relegated to working in hotel.

  5. Fukunaga (Con’t) • Killed Gil Jamieson, 10 year old Caucasian • Son of prominent family in Manoa. • Was convicted of murder-9/18/1928 • Was sentenced to death and hung year later. • Governor could’ve given life sentence. • Shows what happens if non-white kills white.

  6. Massie Case • Involved Caucasian navy wife, Thalia Massie and 5 local men accused of raping her. • Was inconclusive. • Led to revenge killing of one of the local men accused by Lt. Massie.

  7. Massie Case (Con’t) • Lt. Massie got one hour in governor’s office as penalty. • Mandatory sentence: 10 years. • Got away with murder. • Transferred to San Francisco. • Massies got divorced, Thalia died at 53 of drug overdose, Lt. Massie-don’t know. • Showed ethnic differences-Caucasians can get away with murdering non-Caucasians. • Led to calls for statehood.

  8. Americans of Japanese Ancestry (AJA) • Mainly Nisei • Fought in World War II in 442ndRegimental Combat team. • Used G.I. Bill to get educated. • Saw ethnic inequalities, pushed for statehood.

  9. Statehood • August 21, 1959, Hawaii officially 50th state. • Hawaii elected non-Caucasians to U.S. Senate and House. • Hiram Fong, first Asian. • Current Reps and Senators, non-Caucasian • Majority of governors are non-Caucasian.

  10. Hawaiian Power • Native, Part Hawaiians majority population • Once Hawaii a territory, voted against Caucasian Oligarchy. • Oligarchy-Republican, got Prince Kuhio to side with them. • Led to Caucasian, Republican dominance for decades.
