  3. Tonight… • Majority of seminar tonight will be used to cover class expectations for all assignment groups: • Discussion board • Seminar • Projects/Essays • Tonight’s goal: You should leave seminar knowing EXACTLY what is expected and required for an “A”

  4. Grade Breakdown • A/A- Highest grade 90-100% • B-/B/B+ High grade 80-89% • C-/C/C+ Average grade 70-79% • D/D+ Below average grade 60-69% • F Failing grade <60%

  5. Class Expectations Discussion Board (each topic) +Response to the question (100 words +) +Response to classmate’s post (50 words +) = High grade (B) [per syllabus] • Exceeding these requirements=highest grades (A) >Additional comments to classmates, more substantial postings.

Discussion board examples… • Grading is done on a case by case basis, but below are some ‘typical’ grades for the discussion responses per topic listed… • 100(+) word response to the question, 50(+) word comments to 2 classmates: 25/25 • 100(+) word response to the question, 100(+) word comment to a classmate: 25/25 • 100(+) word response to the question, 50(+) word comment to 1 classmate: 22/25 • 100(+) word response to the question, no comments to classmates: 17/25 • Posts that do not meet length requirements will receive fewer points than the above examples.

Seminar -Full credit received for attendance AND participation throughout seminar (you must attend at least 30 minutes—please email me if you are unsure) Or -Full credit for submitting alternate assignment if live seminar is missed --Submit to ‘Doc Sharing’ by end of unit, if possible *For any special considerations, please email me (jpreston@kaplan.edu)

Projects, Essays, etc. • Length requirements do not include title page and reference page • For example: 3-5 pages, means at least 3 FULL pages of text, a title page, and a reference page • Multiple references are encouraged (required for a high A; 100% or close) • APA format: • http://www.apastyle.org (APA site) • http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ (Purdue University Online Writing Lab – OWL)

  9. APA Basics • Parenthetical citations • Direct quotes • Paraphrase • Margins 1” all around (left, right, top, bottom) • Essay double spaced • Click on Format>Paragraph>Line spacing>Double

Most common APA mistakes • Incorrect formatting of title or reference page (minor deduction) • Incorrect placement of citation (minor deduction)… Correct: “Wow, Professor Preston is the most awesomest, coolest, bestest instructor ever” (Abascal, et al., 2010). Incorrect: “Wow, Professor Preston is the most awesomest, coolest, bestest instructor ever.” (Abascal, et al., 2010) • What’s the difference? Notice the placement of the period in relation to the parenthetical citation. Not a big deal, but a common mistake.

  12. Unit 1 Learning Activity • Special Services •   In addition to traditional duties of a security department, there are a number of special functions that it might also be required to carry out. List and discuss at least four of these special functions using formal APA style and references where appropriate.

  13. Unit 1 Learning Activity, cont. • Guidelines • At least one full page • At least one reference (textbook is OK) • “Relaxed” APA format • Title page not necessary • Reference page not necessary BUT be sure to list any references at the end of your essay
