  2. my background • Undergraduate – Pitt, ADP • Youth Worker, Pressley Ridge School for the Deaf • Research Assistant, Dr. Andy Munoz • The past year, • Youth Worker, PA School for the Deaf • Writing Fellow • Graduate – La Salle, Clinical Psychology

  3. why bullying? “Our school rules are really cool. They don't allow bullying at our school. Students who bully, watch out, because you can't get by. Don't even start now! Don't even try!” • Deaf middle school students • John-Hall, A. (2010), Philadelphia Inquirer

  4. what we used to think • Bullying is a normal part of growing up • Everyone gets bullied at one time or another • Bullying builds character; it makes kids tough • Victims don’t suffer over the long run • Bullies will just grow out of it

  5. what we know now • Bullying is not some kind of “rite of passage” • 30% of American students grades 6-10, moderate – frequent involvement in bullying (Nansel, 2001) • bully, victim, bully-victim, bystanders • Serious negative outcomes (Olweus, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2001) • academic, physical, legal, mental health & substance abuse

  6. a missing piece • Virtually no literature around deaf students and bullying (M.T. Weiner & Miller, 2006; Dixon, 2007) • Bauman & Pero, 2011 • Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education • n = 30; grades 7 – 12; survey data • bullying and cyberbullying, at least as bad as it is for hearing students • It might even be worse for deaf students • students with disabilities (Sullivan, 2006) • students who lack appropriate social skills (J. Weiner & Mak, 2009) • Quality staffing, developmental intervention (Vander Ven, 2011)

  7. my study • A school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing • Olweus Bulling Prevention Program • Quantitative data • My qualitative piece • Survey data • Students, teachers and administrators

  8. moving forward • Proposal to the school • IRB approval • Data collection and analysis • The work continues!!
