TAKE-OFFTAKE-OFF A PILOT’S SCHEDULE • Pilot’s are assigned “routes.” • A “route” is called a “trip.” • A “trip” can be one day, two days, three days, or four days. • Every day of a “trip” is made up of “legs.” • A “leg” is one flight from departure airport (take-off) to arrival airport (landing). • A Pilot can fly one “leg” a day, or sometimes six “legs” a day. IN-CLASS ACTIVITY 1 CRUISE –TRACKING OUR PILOT’S JOURNEY PILOT TRACKING SHEET – WEEK ONE Let’s take a look at how many miles our Pilot will fly this week! • For each leg, use the City-to-City Mileage Chart to calculate how many miles there are between the departure city and the arrival city! • Use the 3-Letter City Code Chart to look up the name of each city. • Complete the Pilot Tracking Worksheet. • Calculate how many miles our Pilot flew this week. • Which airport is our Pilot’s favorite airport to land? • If there is time, we can track our Pilot’s flights on www.flightaware.com. IN-CLASS ACTIVITY 2 CRUISE – TO SKY-HIGH CAREERS OPTIONAL VIDEO ACTIVITY Let’s take a look at different jobs available at Southwest Airlines. • Being a Pilot is not the only job available in aviation. • Southwest Airlines employs over 46,000 people, all around the United States. • Let’s see what other Employees LUV their jobs. • Reservation Agents • Customer Service Agents • Operations Agents • Provisioning Agents • Aircraft Mechanics • Flight Attendants Which job sounds fun to you?
