Main Functions of DISCOVER • Inventories: 3 types of assessments: interests, abilities, and values. • Occupations: Look up occupations (i.e. salary, related occupations, training, likes/dislikes, qualities, etc.) • Majors: Look up major information (i.e. general descriptions, courses, related occupations, related majors, schools, etc.) • My Portfolio: Stores all information from other sections. • Schools and Job Search

  11. How to Obtain a Sign On for DISCOVER Program • Call (ext. 2028) or stop in the Career Center • Ask for DISCOVER sign on • Receive sign on and temporary password • Can save all your information

  13. Role of Advisee • Know thyself • Be proactive with advisor • Learn about and adhere to institutional policies • Follow through on actions identified in last session • Accept responsibilities for own academic decisions

  14. 4-Step Planning Process for Students • Self-Analysis. • Narrow down choices after self-analysis to several options that are a good fit. • Explore majors, course requirements and career options for each major considered. • Explore careers, including requirements for each career, salaries, job demands, and predicted job market.

Questions Student Should Explore • What courses sound interesting? • What general education requirements do I need to fulfill? • What are my strongest skills and how can I apply them in various areas of study? • Is there a skill I want to develop? What courses might help me? • What have I always wanted to learn more about? • What majors appeal to me and can capitalize most of my particular skills and talents?
