Hygienic Cylinder HYG f20 to f63SeriesEasily wipedImproved waterproofCompletely contained guide rod in body
Features ●The cylinder’s surface is easily wiped due to the adoption of a new switch design ●Waterproof is greatly improved due to the adoption of a new lubrication mechanism New type of special bushing (ceramic coated) New guide rod design (ceramic coated) New packing (new sectional shape) New grease approved for food (NSF-H1) is available as an option ●Mounting pitch: SMC’s original dimension to save space ●Selectable piping location from top and side
Background of Development and Market ●Target industry: General machinery, Food machinery, and Packaging machinery ●Target zone: splash area + non food area (Refer to “The area without food contact” under Definition of Terms) ●Waterproof construction based on the needs of the market (Instead of being coolant-poof like the existing product) ●The cylinder is easily wiped⇒ The switch is positioned on the surface of the cylinder body
Applications ●Where the cylinder surface is washed. ●Where water splashes on the sliding part of a cylinder in a normal operating environment and significantly shortens its life. Ex: Fish processing machine (splash area) ●In the packaging industry where fluid from a package splashes on the sliding part of a cylinder, significantly shortening its life. Ex: Bottle filling machine (splash area)
Specifications and Performance (Common) Specifications
Comparison in Performance ●There are no competitors that have an equivalent product. The waterproof ability is greatly improved by the adoption of a new lubricating construction
Variation (already released) ●HYQ (Low profile type) f20 to f63 With rubber cushion ●HYC (VDMA conforming type) f32 to f63 With air cushion

Cautions on Handling (1) ●The guide rod has air purge ports. Locate the piping of the air purge ports in a place which is not exposed to splashing water Air purge port Mounting hole Port
Cautions on Handling (2) ●Plug the unused ports when mounting Install plug bolts on unused or unnecessary ports. Install plug bolts on unused mounting holes on the bottom. At the time of shipment, three plug bolts are inserted on the side ports. Separately order additional plug bolts if this is not enough.
Cautions on Handling (3) ●Select food approved grease when splashing water will come in contact with the sliding parts of the cylinder. ●Forcefully wiping off of the grease from the sliding parts can shorten the life of the cylinder. ●Intrusion of metal (magnetic material) between the body of the cylinder and the switch can cause the switch to malfunction. ●Use food approved grease when steam is used for a short duration (a few seconds). Avoid prolong exposure to heat to prevent significantly shortening the life of the cylinder
Definitions of Terms Food zone : British Standard BS EN 1672-2:1997 Food processing machinery- Basic concepts food area: The area where the cylinder comes in direct contact with food released to the market. (A hygienic cylinder is not available.) The area without food contact Splash area The area where the cylinder can come in contact with food which is not released to the market. Nonfood area The area where the cylinder does not come in contact with food. A hygienic cylinder is available.
