Timeline 1597 Romeo and Juliet is written
Elizabethan Era Lineage • First was KingHenry VIII. During his reign he pulled England away from the Catholic Church in Rome (demeaning the Pope) just so he could divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, for a younger Anne Boleyn (thus began Protestantism). • He ended up having Anne Boleyn executed later on suspicion of adultery. • King Henry VIII had 6 wives.
Bloody Mary • Once Henry VIII died, his eldest daughter (of Catherine of Aragon) Queen Mary came to rule England. She wanted the country back the way it was before Henry VIII reigned (back to Catholicism). • She killed over 300 religious dissenters by burning them at the stake, executing anyone who wasn’t Catholic in England. • This earned her the nickname Bloody Mary.
Queen Elizabeth • Once Queen Mary died, Elizabeth I (a daughter of Henry VIII by Anne Boleyn) succeeded the throne. • When Elizabeth took the throne from Mary, England was like one big party. She brought the country from a state of chaos to one of stability. She established a religious peace within the country (between Catholics and Protestants). She also defeated the invasion of the Spanish Armada and thus established England’s independence as well as a sense of national identity. • These deeds secured Elizabeth as one of England’s most beloved Queens of all time.
The Virgin Queen • Queen Elizabeth reigned for 44 years, an astounding amount of time since the average lifespan of a person was about 45 years for a man, and in the 20s for women. • Elizabeth refused to marry. Although many frowned on this because it was proper for women of this time to produce an heir, Elizabeth knew that a husband would steal the throne from her. So she became known as the Virgin Queen. • Queen Elizabeth was on the throne during Shakespeare’s time.
Portrait of Queen Elizabeth • Here Elizabeth rests her hand on a globe, signifying her predominance as a world ruler. • The Spanish Armada is in the background, showing Elizabeth’s strength in battle. • She was highly fashionable and cared much about appearances. She was often seen adorned with jewels and a red wig, marking her royalty and elegance.
Writing • This time period (late 1500s to early 1600s) is often known as the English Renaissance because of the flourishing of music, theater, and especially writing and poetry. It was also a great time of exploration abroad, and England began setting up colonies in the Americas. • So Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers of one of the greatest literary periods of the English language, and Romeo and Juliet is one of his most popular works.
