  2. General Care of Houseplants Low indoor humidity can damage houseplants causing brown leaf tips. Placing plants on pebble trays filled with water can increase humidity. Spider mites thrive in dry conditions, but can be removed by hosing plants down with cool water or using insecticidal soap every 3-4 days. Pebble trays can be made from large plant saucers and cleaned with vinegar to remove mineral buildup.
