  3. MS Degree Options • Master of Science in Electrical & Computer Engineering • Thesis Option (Plan A) • Report Option (Plan B) • Coursework Only Option (Plan D)

MS Degree Requirements • Choose an Advisor. • 30 Total Approved Credits. • 20 (minimum) credits in ECE • Grades of B or better in all ECE courses. • Passing grades in the research thrust area seminars every semester in residence. • Official final transcripts showing proof of your previous degrees (if not from MTU). • Filled out Patent, Research and Proprietary Rights form.

  5. MS Degree Requirements (cont.) • Choose an Option (A, B or D) • Present a Research/Project Proposal (A or B) • Complete a thesis (Plan A) or report (Plan B) • Complete an Oral Defense (A or B) • File the MS Degree Schedule Form (M4) • File the Oral Examination Forms (M5& M6)

MS Thesis Option (Plan A) • A minimum of 30 credits is required. • 20 credits (minimum) of course work • 12 credits (minimum) 5000-6000 series • 12 credits (maximum) 3000-4000 series • 3 credits (minimum) outside the department • 20 credits (minimum) in ECE • 6-10 research credits (EE 5990) • Approval of Advisor

MS Report Option (Plan B) • A minimum of 30 credits is required. • 24 credits (minimum) of course work • 12 credits (minimum) 5000-6000 series • 12 credits (maximum) 3000-4000 series • 3 credits (minimum) outside the department • 20 credits (minimum) in ECE • 2-6 project credits (EE 5991) • Approval of Advisor

MS Coursework Option (Plan D) • A minimum of 30 credits is required. • 30 credits (minimum) of course work • 18 credits (minimum) 5000-6000 series • 12 credits (maximum) 3000-4000 series • 3 credits (minimum) outside the department • Research credits NOT allowed as coursework credits! • 20 credits (minimum) in ECE • Approval of Advisor

  9. Other MS Degree Examinations • Thesis/Report Proposal – An Oral Presentation and Examination of Proposed Thesis Research or Project Report. • Thesis/Report Defense – An Oral Presentation and Examination of Research Thesis or Project Report (except for Plan D).

Research Thrust Areas • Computer Engineering • Embedded Computing, Real-Time Systems • High Assurance systems, Safety-Critical Systems, Fault-Tolerance • Memory Systems Architectures and Performance • Memory Controller Interconnects and Policy Decisions • Energy Systems • Energy Conversion • Systems • Transients

  11. Research Thrust Areas (cont.) • Information Systems • Signal and Image Processing • Communication Systems • Solid State Electronics • Electromagnetics • Electronic Materials and Devices

Procedures for MS Students • First Semester • Choose an advisor (Graduate Program Director can help, if required). • Complete a tentative study plan. • Register for the second semester courses. • Submit final official transcripts showing proof of your previous degrees (if not from MTU or unless done previously). • Fill out the Patent, Research and Proprietary Rights form.

Procedures for MS Students (cont.) • Second Semester • Choose the thesis, report or coursework option (Plan A, B or D). • Complete the final study plan. • Present a thesis or project proposal (Plan A or B) • Begin work on thesis or project (Plan A or B) • Register for the third semester courses. • Third to Last Semester • Submit degree schedule M4 to the Graduate School.
