A Day in the Life of Max • 5:30 AM: Alarm rings • 5:45 AM: Shower • 6:00 AM: EAT BREAKFAST!! • 6:15 AM: Pack lunch • 6:25 AM: Pack gym clothes, books, homework, science project • 6:35 AM: RUUUUN for the bus, once he catches it, opens Econ textbook and starts reading • 7:35 – 8:40 AM: Precalculus • 8:45 – 9:25 AM: AP Economics • 9:30 – 9:40 AM: Registry • 9:50 – 10:55 AM: Honors French • 11:00 – 11:40 AM: AP English • 11:45 – 12:25 PM: PE • 12:30 – 12:50 PM: Lunch • 12:55 – 1:35 PM: Honors Chemistry • 1:40 – 2:45 PM: AP Psychology • 2:50 – 3:30 PM: Leadership

Max’s After-School Life Last Week MONDAY • 4:00 – 6:00 PM: Theater Tech • 6:15 PM: Pick up little brother from Lakeshore • 6:40 PM: Ruuuun for bus home • 7:15 PM: Eat dinner • 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM: HOMEWORK TIME!!!! TUESDAY • 4:00 – 6:00 PM: Community Service at the Senior Center • 6:15 PM: Pick up little brother from Lakeshore • 6:40 PM: Ruuuun for bus home • 7:15 PM: Eat dinner • 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM: HOMEWORK TIME!!!!

Max’s After School Life Last Week WEDNESDAY • 4:00 – 6:30 PM: Off – Season Soccer Practice • 6:40 PM: Ruuuun for bus home • 7:15 PM: Shower • 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM: HOMEWORK TIME (eat dinner while working) !!!! THURSDAY • 3:30 – 5:30 PM: YOW Meeting • 5:45 PM: Ruuuun for bus • 6:15 – 7:15 PM: Church Group • 7:20 PM: Ruuuuun for bus home • 8:00 PM – 12:00 AM: HOMEWORK TIME (eat dinner while working) !!!!

Max’s After School Life Last Week FRIDAY • 3:40 PM: Finds out girlfriend is going with someone else to the dance tomorrow • 3:45: Runs to Student Government meeting to tell advisor he won’t be able to attend today’s meeting • 4:00 – 6:30 PM: Talks on the phone to ex-girlfriend • 6:40 PM: Ruuuns to bus home • 7:15 PM: Arrives home to angry parents – he’s forgotten to pick up his little brother at school!!! • 7:45 PM: GROUNDED! Not allowed to go to the dance and has the whole weekend to do homework.

  8. The limbic brain is a primitive organ, like the brain of a reptile or mammal. Contains the amygdala. Sometimes called the emotional brain. The ‘cortex’ or bark-like surface of the brain allows human speech and intellect. It contains the prefrontal cortex, the center of executive function such as reason. The EMOTIONAL Brain & The RATIONAL Brain

Emotional Brain (Limbic Brain) Unconscious Primarily concerned with survival Tied to the body Anatomical structure is rudimentary, swift responses Rational Brain (Neocortex) Concentration Inhibition of instincts Moral behavior Focuses on outside influences Anatomical structure highly organized Balancing the two brains is the source of mental life.

  10. When the two brains get along = cooperation = harmony. When the two brains compete = unhappiness = stressed out. How does it feel?

The emotional brain can put the pre-frontal cortex “off-line”. • Under stress, the prefrontal cortex no longer responds and looses its capacity to control behavior. • Interventions to calm the emotional brain through the body can be very effective; sleep, nutritious food, focus on the breath, exercise, think of a favorite place, listen to music, the support of friends and family…

Adolescent Stress Response • Can be biological, social, familial, emotional, academic • Result of perceiving a situation as dangerous, difficult or painful and not having resources to cope • Often related to adult-like responsibilities w/out adult privileges • School, peer and family expectations • Brain development contributes to stress response • Stress management skill acquisition important
