  1. How We Will Report Major Events The following slides detail how to create the TELEGRAPH MESSAGES. These will be the class notes covering Civil War Events.

  2. TELEGRAPHS 1844: Perfected by Samuel Morse using his special code. The famous ???? This is the first form of “Text Messaging” using dots and dashes. These will be a part of your notebook. (traditional or electronic)

  3. Telegraph Template Telegraph Number & Headline: #1 Crisis @ Fort Sumter Date:Month, Day (s), Year it occurred When was Ft. Sumter?

  4. Next Comes The Facts Page Example of Fact Page: F1 F2 F3 F4 F5 GO TO NEXT PAGE FOR EXPLANATION

  5. We Report Major Facts About The Event Facts: Number each distinct fact as: F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 We will interpretat least 5 specifics about the event. Do not Cut/Paste factsunless told. Tip: Think in terms of the 5 W and How questions to summarize the event. DO NOT just write a jumbled paragraph

  6. Next Comes:H.I. = Human Interest Find a factoid about this Civil War event. Think in terms of a story that brings “life” into this event about people or is good “trivia”. Start it with H.I.

  7. Last Comes: R=Results Each telegraph message will conclude with descriptions-facts that show why this event is important towards the progress of the war. If event is a battle: Who won? Casualties If event is political: How does it impact the war?

  8. Telegraph #1 RESULT: • Yankees Surrendered the Fort after 34 hrs of bombing. Fort on fire and out of food. • Lincoln’s Reaction – What he calls for: • South’s Reaction in response to Lincoln’s call for 75,000 volunteers:
