  4. Scholarships – Tips for Students Focus on college-based & local scholarships. Review ScholarshipQuest at EducationQuest.org. Search free sites to find national awards. Use College Funding Estimator at EducationQuest.org to determine if eligible for need-based awards Requst letters of recommendation 2 weeks in advance of due date.

  5. Grants • Money students don’t repay – based on financial need: • Federal • Pell Grant (range $605-$5,645) • SEOG (Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) • State • Nebraska Opportunity Grant (from lottery dollars) • College-based

  6. Work Study • Based on financial need • Allows students to earn money while attending college • Paid for hours worked • Money is not paid up-front to pay for tuition • Earnings will not impact financial aid the following year

  7. Student Loans • Need-Based – Interest does NOT accrue while in school • Perkins Loan • Direct Subsidized Loan • Non-Need-Based – Interest DOES accrue while in school • Direct Unsubsidized Loan • Parent PLUS Loan

  8. Financial Aid Process PIN FAFSA Processor College receives student’s FAFSA info Student receives their SAR (Student Aid Report) College sends Financial Aid Award Letter to student

  9. Personal Identification Number • Request at pin.ed.gov • Student and parent must register • Must provide SSN, name, address, date of birth • Select 4-digit PIN • Can be viewed immediately • Use for data Retrieval from IRS • Serves as electronic signature for FAFSA and Loan Promissory Notes

  10. PIN…continued • Required to make electronic FAFSA corrections • Allows access to online grant and loan data history • PIN challenge question • No longer case-sensitive • Cannot have a space (ex. Grand Island would be grandisland)

FAFSA General Info FREE Application for Federal Student Aid fafsa.ed.gov PIN: pin.ed.gov EFC: Estimated Family Contribution Confirmation email sent immediately when transaction is successfully submitted SAR (Student Aid Report) emailed 3-5 days Make sure name & address are entered into the FAFSA EXACTLY as they are on your tax return

Additional Resources If students meet these criteria, tuition is COVERED! • Collegebound Nebraska • UNO, UNL, UNK • NE resident, full-time student, Pell eligible • Must complete FAFSA by April 1 • Must have all requested documents to college by June 1 • Advantage (Nebraska College System) • Wayne, Peru, Chadron • NE resident, full-time student, Pell eligible • Must complete FAFSA by June 1

Additional Resources Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation Scholarship • New Dates • Online application opens: November 1, 2013 • Deadline: February 1, 2014 • Student Aid Report due March 15, 2014 • Application Requirements • New: Copy/Results of the College Funding Estimator • New: Financial need = EFC below $15,000

Additional Resources Buffett Foundation Scholarship - continued • Amount of Award • Maximum - $4,250/semester • Varies at institution • Renewable • Maintain 2.0 or higher GPA • Earn at least 18 credit hours/calendar year • Renewable up to 5 years (4-year college) or 3 years (2-year college) • www.buffettscholarships.org
