  1. Forward Shower Counter IIfor FP420 meeting with CMS referees 28 April 2008 Discussion of the detectors by Edwin Norbeck For Y. Onel’s group at the Univ. of Iowa

  2. Assumed requirements Measure number of particles around beam line Position resolution: 4 quadrants(two sides, top and bottom) Determine direction– to or from the IP Measurements every 25 ns Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  3. Method Plastic scintillator for number of particles Čerenkov counter to measure direction(one in front of and one behind each scintillator) 12 PMTs required to collect the light Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  4. Diagram of Forward Shower Counter Setup PMT UV Lucite Plastic Scintillator Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  5. Not shown are many additional parts such as light guides Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  6. Diagram of prototype PMT Lucite cylinder Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  7. Experimental Setup Scintillator and PMT at 2kV 0° Orientation PMT WINDOW Hamamatsu R7525 PMT at 1.5kV and lucite in tube allowing entire assembly to be flipped 180°

  8. Results with prototype(cosmic-ray muons) Could set threshold for Čerenkov detector (in coincidence with plastic scintillator) such that: For Čerenkov counter looking up, see number of counts expected from cosmic rays, about one per second. For same counter looking down, see less than one per minute. Čerenkov counters determine direction Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  9. Time schedule We will walk the beam line in the second week of May to determine best locations for the FSCsThree of us from Iowa will be there with the ZDC. Should we install a Protoype before first beam?Tunnel closed 21 May Could get one module (one scintillator and a pair of 200 mm x 200 mm Čerenkov detectors) by 21 May. It may be difficult to get cables, electronics, etc. This setup would have smaller signals and more noise that the final version. Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  10. Time schedule (cont.) Complete unit could be ready by July. Make only one (for one side of CMS)A second unit would strain our resources without additional funding. The first unit is only for low luminosity, not rad hard LATER: Replace UV enabled Lucite with quartz plates or fibers Add GEM detectors to provide position information Make more units (using rad hard materials) Ed Norbeck Shower Counters

  11. Electronics Almost identical to ZDC HF and CASTOR also use Čerenkov and PMTs. Iowa can make detectors but needs help with electronics. Getting cables installed in tunnel at this late date will not be easy. Ed Norbeck Shower Counters
