TIMELINE • JUNIOR YEAR • February – June • Register for SATs @ www.collegeboard.org • Students should meet with their counselor for an individual college counseling session • Students and parents should register on Naviance and start researching schools • Ask teachers for letters of recommendation • Plan college visits and tours • If on an IEP, be sure the plan and all testing is current within three years of date of application to colleges • Complete Counselor Questionnaire and Resume on Naviance
Visit colleges • Write college essay over the summer- See website for details on how to write a great essay! • Finalize list of colleges • Keep a record of college application deadlines • Student should register for fall SAT if they plan to take it again, or for the first time July – August
SENIOR YEAR • September – October • Take SATs if needed • Student should meet with their Counselor and be prepared with the following: 1. Counselor Questionnaire and Resume (on Naviance) 2. Rough draft of essay 3. List of schools with application deadlines • Ask teachers for letters of recommendation • Give each teacher a copy of resume
RESPONSIBILITY FORMULA STUDENT + GUIDANCE COUNSELOR + PARENT = A PLAN
Student Responsibilities • Know which standardized tests the colleges require and then register for these tests at www.collegeboard.org or www.actstudent.org • Keep aware of registration deadlines for SAT and/or ACT, SAT II • Add colleges to your Family Connection page • Request transcripts • Complete Counselor Questionnaire, and Resume on Naviance, and share essay with counselor • Research and apply for scholarships • Complete necessary Financial Aid forms
Guidance Counselor Responsibilities • Be available by appointment to students and parents • Send requested transcripts, letter of recommendation, school profile and • Secondary School Report Form • Send First Quarter grades • Send Mid-Yr. Grades • Send Final Transcripts
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Guide students in the application process • (DO NOT DO THE APPLICATIONS FOR THEM!) • Attend Jr. Parent Night Guidance Seminar • Complete FAFSA and CSS Profile • Be aware of Financial Aid deadlines • Accompany student on college visits • If student is on an IEP be sure the plan and the required tests are all • current within three years of application date • IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SEE THAT THESE TESTS ARE SENT!
Family Connection • Web-based resource that supports career and college planning • Specific to SHS students • Linked with Admissions Counselor’s Office, a service that the counselors use
How is it accessed? • Family Connection is on the Web • Student accounts • Parent accounts • Guidance Counselor accounts • We have helped all students register
