Common Core Standards Initiative • Approximately 41 States and some territories have currently adopted them • California adopted them August 2, 2010 • Common Core State Standards • Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical subjects • Common Core State Standards for Mathematics • California made some adjustments • Added some standards (no more than 15%) • Moved some standards to different grade levels
Common Core Next Steps • Frameworks • Professional development • Assessments • The California Department of Education presented implementation timelines to a joint meeting between SBE and the Commission on Teacher Credentialing November 8, 2010. • One Timeline requires legislation • The other timeline assumes no legislation is passed.
Implementation Timeline 1 • Assumes legislation to lift suspension under Education Code Section 60200.7 • Assumes the Curriculum Commission is funded for 2011 and subsequent years.
Implementation Timeline 2 • Assumes no legislative action to lift suspension under EC Section 60200.7 • Assumes the activities of the Curriculum Commission are funded.
Assessment • Two Assessment Consortiums are designing assessments aligned to the CCSS. • California has currently signed on with the PARCC Consortium. • It is possible that CA will switch to the other assessment Consortium SBAC (SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium). • Test will be for grades 2-8 and one in high school - probably grade 11. • Timeline • Pilot and Field Test 2011-2014 • Implementation 2014-15
PARCC ACHIEVE is Project Manager - Awarded 170 million Overall assessment system will include a mix of constructed response items, performance tasks, and computer-enhanced, computer-scored items. ELA/Literacy and Mathematics • 3 “through-course” components • administered after 25%, 50%, and 75% of instruction • End-of-year component • Administered after 90% of instruction • Speaking & listening components • Administered after 75% of instruction (not part of summative score)
SBAC WestEd is Project Manager – Awarded 160 million • 1 reading, 1 writing and 2 math performance assessments in last 12 weeks of school. • Delivered via Computer and will take one to two class periods to complete • End of year comprehensive assessment using Computer Adaptive technology. • 40-65 questions per content area. • Selected-response, constructed response, and technology-enhanced items. • Optional Interim Assessments • Computer Adaptive Assessments and Performance Tasks.
