  2. I. Zhou Dynasty (1122 B.C. – 256 B.C.) – Longest Chinese dynasty • Roles of the Zhou kings 1. Military Leader → Led army 2. Political Leader → Led gov and bureaucracy 3. Spiritual Leader → Link between heaven and earth, must carry out religious rituals that strengthen the links between people and the gods.

How did kings justify their power? • Zhou kings based their power on The Mandate of Heaven (divine right to rule) • Kings need to gain the confidence of the people to claim the Mandate of Heaven. What kinds of conditions in China will make the people feel confident? • As long as the king has the people’s confidence, he keeps the Mandate / stays in power. • How does a king lose the Mandate?
