Modulation. Modulation to the Dominant Key. Let’s consider a chord progression in the key of C C, Am, F, G The Dominant key of C is G. Dominant Key. A simple way to get to the key of G is by playing a D7 at the end of the sequence.

Modulation to the Dominant Key • Let’s consider a chord progression in the key of C • C, Am, F, G • The Dominant key of C is G.
Dominant Key • A simple way to get to the key of G is by playing a D7 at the end of the sequence. • D7 is the Dominant chord of G and will therfore give us a perfect cadence that leads naturally into the new key of G. • C, Am, F, G • C, Am, F, D7 • G, Em, C, D
Dominant Key - The II, V, I… • To make the transition a little more fluid we can also introduce the II chord, thereby making a II, V, 1. • So… • C, Am, F, G • C, Am, Am, D7 then… • G, Em, C, D. • You could also play Am7.. • C, Am, Am7, D7
Subdominant Key • Let’s consider a chord progression in the key of C • C, Am, F, G • The Subdominant key of C is F.
Subdominant Key • A simple way to get to the key of F is by playing a C7 at the end of the sequence. • C7 is the Dominant chord of F and will therefore give us a perfect cadence that leads naturally into the new key of F. • C, Am, F, G • C, Am, F, C7 • F, Dm, Bb, C
Subdominant Key - The II, V, I… • To make the transition a little more fluid we can also introduce the II chord, thereby making a II, V, 1. • So… • C, Am, F, G • C, Am, Gm, C7 then… • F, Dm, Bb, C. • You could also play Gm7.. • C, Am, Gm7, C7
Super-Tonic • The Super-Tonic is the second chord of the scale so, in C, it is Dm. However, in reality, in a Pop song in a major key you would modulate to the Parallel Super-Tonic! • Any ideas why?
Our original sequence: • C, Am, F, G • How could we get to the key of D knowing what we now know…?
That’s right! • We could use an A7! • And why…? • Absolutely, A7 is the Dominant chord of D major. Easy!
Today.. • Let’s try it out. • You need to create a chord sequence with accompanying melody and then: • Modulate to the Dominant key and adjust the chords and melody to now play in the new key. • Modulate to the Sub-Dominant key and adjust the chords and melody to now play in the new key. • Modulate to the (parallel) Super-Tonic key and adjust the chords and melody to now play in the new key.
