  3. Why should you care about art? • Do you care about being manipulated?

  4. Do you want to eat food? • Meat painted with water and food coloring • Filling sprayed with WD-40 • Red peppers not diced tomatoes • Corn syrup on beans so they look moist and fresh

  5. Do you want to go on vacation?

  6. Do you want to buy clothes? Unrealistic models Where is Kylie’s foot?

  7. Do you want to vote? • In politics the world is often presented as yes or no, black or white, good or bad, for or against.

  8. Understanding art is the key to understanding what they are trying to sell you

  9. What careers available? • “Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses – learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.” — Leonardo da Vinci

  10. Professional Athlete • Lebron James • James has carefully been crafting a brand since he entered the NBA. A brand as recognizable as any in the sports world.

  11. Mathmetician • Maryam Mirzakhani, Fields Winner, Doodler • “The process of drawing something helps you somehow to stay connected. I am a slow thinker, and have to spend a lot of time before I can clean up my ideas and make progress.”

  12. Author • J.K. Rowling • Commented she preferred the versions without showing Harry’s face, but understood the importance of appealing to young readers.

  13. Astronaut • Alan Bean, Astronaut & Artist • Alan Bean was the only artist to travel to the moon. While other astronauts brought back lunar rocks and soil, he brought back a visual interpretation. 

  14. Engineer • Ron Slade • Using real working drawings from a 50 year career, Ron Slade shows how drawing remains at the heart of the design process in the everyday working life of engineers and architects.

  26. Costume • Costume designer Ruth E. Carter referenced the Maasai, Himba, Dogon, Basotho, Tuareg, Turkana, Xhosa, Zulu, Suri and Dinka people in her designs. • The Maasai people of Kenya inspired about 80% of the design of the Dora Milaje, Wakanda's all-female special forces. Karla Ortiz

Fabrics • Carter also used distinct colors and patterns for each of Wakanda'stribes: • River Tribe: green with shells (Suri) • Border Tribe: blue with wood • Merchant Tribe: plums and purples (Tuareg) • Mining Tribe: ocre (Himba) • Royal: black with royal purple • Overall, Carter created 700 costumes for the film, working with "an army" of illustrators, designers, mold makers, fabric dyers, jewelry makers and more.

  29. Realistic Steps • Take an art history course (or two) • Check out books from the library • Visit museums and art galleries • Listen to podcasts • Join a local art group (www.artistsinaction.org) • Take a drawing class • Find a favorite artist

  30. Obstacles • If you go even faintly into the creative fields, however, you should expect obstacles. • These are the things I struggle with.
