Ice Breaker • Are these people beautiful?
Ice Breaker • Or are these people beautiful?
What is Beauty • Beauty Definition: a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic sense, esp. the sight. • Tally thought the Peris was the most handsome person in the world, but as distanced herself from reality and lived in The Smoke, she thought David was handsome.
Beauty in uglies • There is two different societies in Uglies • New Pretty Town vs. The Smoke • Special Circumstance divides the society into cuties, uglies, new pretties, middle pretties, and old pretties. • Society made it clear that being an ugly like being prisoner • Society made uglies believe they were ugly, so they will come to accept the operation • Society would moderate them like lab rats to make sure they were ready for the operation
Beauty in UGLIES • The Smoke broke down the the barriers of pretty and ugly • Instead everyone is different because of the genetics passed down from generation from generation • Natural Beauty is what is important in The Smoke. • Everyone in society is equal and everyone in society has a place • There is no restrictions and limitations to what the people can do. • No body is judged based on their beauty, but their skills and personality. • Everyone in The Smoke has to work on either cutting down tress, killing animals for food, clearing out the railroads
Beauty in Our Society • Children don’t see imperfections, but see everything around them as amazing and magical • But, when we grow up our innocence fades and all we see is our imperfections • In order to be considered beautiful, we need approval from others • Some go to extreme means to be beautiful • Plastic surgery, makeup, and exercising
Appearance • People want: • Big eyes • High check bones • Plump Lips • Narrow nose
Appearance in Our Society • Little kids don’t have to worry about what they are going to wear, whether or not they need to wear make up or do their hair. • But, when we all reach that awkward teenager phase we experiment with our looks • Some are socially excepted and some are not
Appearance • Is this socially accepted? Is this socially accepted? or
Society wants us to fit a mole/expectation • Society wants us as citizens to look innocent and non threating. • But, people have the right to dress in their own individual style • But, when they deviate from society they are called ugly
Appearance • People want to get plastic surgery, because they are unhappy with their appearance • Society doesn't like their appearance so they change themselves • When people get plastic surgery they wont stop, they want more and more, until they cant recognize themselves in the mirror. • Society creates these unrealistic expectations that average people try to match • People will still judge you based on your appearance no matter what they do • Appearance is a passing trend.
self-esteem • Plastic surgery affects self-esteem • Where will the line be drawn when plastic surgery is so attainable • “It’s a Personal Choice” by Doris Day • Everyone strives to look their best, but it becomes harder with old age.
Self-Esteem • Altering the way you look changes the way you feel • When you undergo plastic surgery, you feel more confident in your own skin, but it isn't your skin anymore • When you look your best, you feel your best • Smoke vs. Uglies idea of beauty
Identity • Individual Purpose: • If the “uglies” didn't’t get the surgery, then they weren't part of the New Pretty society and were seen as outcast. • But, “uglies” found away around that by running away to the The Smoke • Individual Value: • In Uglies, people are not valuable because of their own ideas. But following what society wants.
Mass Media • Our society has become dependent on different forms of media to tell us what is beautiful • Whether it be on TV commercials, movies, and magazines beauty plays a factor • Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are used as tools to advertise beauty • But social media can be used to define what is beautiful and what is ugly
Beauty Sells • Big companies use beauty as a marketing technique • Fast Food Commercials • If the Movie has attractive actors more people will see it • It is no longer just about skill, beauty is part of the whole package
Photoshop and Uglies • Photoshop is used by industry professionals to enhance images in magazines and billboards • In Uglies, Tally and Shay used a device similar to Photoshop, which allowed them to alter their appearance to predict what they look life after the operation • Also, in Uglies special circumstance placed New Pretty Town right in front of Uglyville to make sure uglies saw what they were missing being ugly

The Dangers of the media • These different forms of media have a damaging affect on our society • Media influences the decisions we make and whether or not it will be accepted • Media is our form of special circumstances making sure we do not deviate from society • Media put so much pressure on young people to fit in their model that doesn’t even exist in the first place
Power • Attractive people can persuade others more easily because they use their looks as an advantage • Ugly people are not given the same respect as pretty people • Appealing people tend to get the rules bended. • In Uglies the “pretties” partied and did whatever they want, though when an “ugly” did something out of order they get into trouble. • Tally jumped off the building and the “pretties” made a big deal about it. Whenever a pretty did it, it was seen as cool.
Power • Celebrities in our society are lionized and are seen as above the law • Celebrities use their good looks to get what they want, (ex. Free clothes, sport cars, and special treatment) • Society builds up celebrates to be important like we need to hear what they have to say • Why is Kim Kardashian famous?
Power • “There was something magic in their large and perfect eyes, something that made you want to pay attention to whatever they said, to protect them from any danger, to make them happy. They were so…pretty” (Westerfeld 7). • In the bookUglies, “pretties” were treated as if they were celebreties. Everyone looked up to them, gazed in amazement, and wanted to be like them. Physically and in their lifestyles. • Average people want to be beautiful, because they want to feel special and wanted. They feel powerless. • But, when they became beautiful they lost a part of themselves that they cant get back. • Just like the brain lessons in Uglies
In The Smoke • When Shay was a Smokey she • was considered a threat to the • Special Circumstances. Though • when they turned her into a • “pretty” she was socially accepted • thembecause she conformed to their • Expectations of how to live. Even if • That means losing who she truly was. Special Circumstance only saw Shay as a pawn not a person
Power • Job/positions are biased in our world and in Uglies • In article “Beauty Contestants Fights for Right of Self Improvements” by Jim Yardley, mentions no matter how hard it was for Yang Yuan to join a pageant, she was still denied for her “artificial beauty”. • Most jobs in society today are biased. If women don’t wear makeup to work its considered as sloppy or unprofessional. • How pretties obtain jobs. Uglies who remain ugly do not receive a job when they are older.
conclusion • Beauty is an element in society that will never cease to exist. • Beauty is becoming more evident in society • In terms of economic prosperity, personal luxury, and social acceptance • Beauty existed long before we as a society could define it. So who are we to stay something is beautiful.
Discussion • In groups we will discuss the different aspects of beauty • Appearance/Self-Esteem, Identity, Media, and Power • We will ask you questions about one topic in each group
