  1. CNR-Ibimet CONTRIBUTION (1st and 2nd years): • Select/Calibrate and Validate models to simulate typical Mediterranean crops (e.g. durum wheat, grapevine, olive tree) • Apply these models at the Mediterranean domain

  2. Model for simulating: durum wheat SIRIUS-QUALITY 1.1 (P. Martre et al., 2004) The model calculates biomass production from PAR and grain growth from simple partitioning rules. • Climate Model inputs (daily data): • minimum and maximum temperature, • rainfall • global radiation. • The model simulates: • the soil water budget, • soil-plant nitrogen budget, • crop development, growth and yield, • protein concentration and composition • direct impact of extreme events • Management options include: • cultivar selection, • sowing date, • irrigation and nitrogen fertilization

  3. Model for simulating: grapevine VITE-model (Bindi et al., 1997a,b) • VITE-model is a model that uses a simplified mechanistic approach based on the accumulated degree days, the radiation use efficiency and the fruit biomass index to simulate the main processes regulating: • Crop development • Crop growth • Yield quantity and quality components (i.e., sugar and acid content) • The effect of water stress on crop growth is also included on the basis of the fraction of the transpirable soil water (FTSW).

  4. Model for reproducing: suitable area for olive tree cultivation

  5. Simulation of durum wheat yield SIRIUS Quality was applied over the durum wheat cultivated area to estimate average yield. • Sites: 555 grid points (50 Km side) • Baseline climate: 30 years (1975-2005) of daily Temperature, Rainfall and Global Radiation (from MARS JRC Archive) • CO2 air concentration: 350 ppm • Soil properties: from the Eusoils database • Nitrogen level: 170 Kg ha-1

  6. Simulation of grapevine yield Vite-model was applied over the grapevine suitable cultivated area to estimate average yield. • Sites: 762 grid points (50 Km side) • Baseline climate: 30 years (1975-2005) of daily Temperature, Rainfall and Global Radiation (from MARS JRC Archive) • CO2 concentration:350 ppm • Soil properties: from the Eusoils database

  7. Reproduction of suitable olive tree cultivation area Predictive model was applied to reproduce suitable olive tree cultivation area • Baseline climate: from MARS JRC database (1975-2005) • Climatic limits: • Tmean Jan > 3°C • Tmean Jul > 22°C • Annual Rainfall > 230 mm

  8. Impact and adaptation applications Selected model will be applied to assess impact of and adaptation to climate change CIRCE Climate Scenarios Adaptations Impacts
