The Susquehanna River sulfate fluxes are modeled from USGS data and were fit with a Gaussian curve in order to predict fluxes for periods where there are no records. The ShaleNetworkDatabase:Our hypothesis Sustainable development of the Marcellus Shale will be enabled by creation of a database of geochemistry and hydrology developed by watershed groups, government agencies, industry stakeholders, and universities working together to document natural variability and potential environmental impacts. Quoting from the recently released EPA report: The EPA has begun a study designed to provide decision-makers and the public with answers to the five fundamental questions associated with the hydraulic fracturing water lifecycle: Water Acquisition: What are the potential impacts of large volume water withdrawals from ground and surface waters on drinking water resources? Chemical Mixing: What are the possible impacts of surface spills on or near well pads of hydraulic fracturing fluids on drinking water resources? Well Injection: What are the possible impacts of the injection and fracturing process on drinking water resources? Flowback and Produced Water: What are the possible impacts of surface spills on or near well pads of flowback and produced water on drinking water resources? Wastewater Treatment and Waste Disposal: What are the possible impacts of inadequate treatment of hydraulic fracturing wastewaters on drinking water resources? ShaleNetwork.org

What is the ShaleNetwork doing? • We are building a ShaleNetwork database that will be accessible at shalenetwork.org and also through HydroDesktop • HydroDesktopis an online tool that will allow anyone to access and play with the database or with data from individual groups • We will be running the first of three annual workshops to talk about and use the database at Penn State April 22,23, 2012

HydroDesktop • CUAHSI has built a data portal, HydroDesktop, that can be used to access and play with data • It can be downloaded from http://www.hydrodesktop.org/ (click on the "Downloads' tab and download Hydrodesktop v 1.2.642 and install that on a Windows machine. There is no Mac version; however, this version works on a Mac running the Windows operating system. This is not yet an "approved" release and there are a few features that are still broken on this release.) • HydroDesktop can already be used to access data for PA in the region of Marcellus exploitation ShaleNetwork.org

  9. We are seeking advice • Will HydroDesktop be a good piece of software for citizen scientists? • Will we put all the data in the database, or will citizen scientists want to put their data into the database themselves? How can we facilitate getting data into the database? ShaleNetwork.org

  12. We are seeking advice • How should the data be “labelled”? We will call our database the ShaleNetworkDatabase (shalenetwork.org)…how can we appropriately label each dataset by and for those who collect the data? ShaleNetwork.org

  15. We are seeking advice • What chemical components should we include in the database? (Note that not every contributing group has to measure all the same components). ShaleNetwork.org

Shale elemental composition (Liermann et al., 2011) The Marcellus shale's average composition in Huntingdon PA is 20% quartz silt, 50% clay minerals, 5% pyrite, and 25% calcite with varying amounts of feldspars, dolomite, siderite, gypsum, pyrite, marcasite, and barite (Liermann et al., 2011; Hosterman1993). The clays consist of 15% chlorite, 70% illite, and 15% mixed illite-smectite; no kaolinite is present, unlike some other Devonian black shales in the Appalachian basin (Hosterman 1993).   24. Here, all data collected by USGS (2011) from all rivers in PA west of 77.5o longitude are plotted. Data derives from 121 different sites on rivers and streams: a total of 387 Ba and 637 Sr measurements are plotted.  Values listed as < 100 or < 500 were excluded under the assumption that these samples were not quantified. Figures are unpublished and were used in the ShaleNetwork proposal to NSF.   25. We are seeking advice • Who should be invited to input data into the database? We want to be very inclusive: how can we encourage folks to share their data with us so that we can put it into our database? ShaleNetwork.org

  26. There are many gas shale plays in the U.S.A…eventually it would be helpful to share data from other regions. We will start with a focus on the region of Marcellus and Utica shale gas plays. Arthur et al., 2008 ShaleNetwork.org
