Daily Notes • Describe how science can be used in a criminal investigation.
Forensic Science • Uses science to answer questions related to legal issues • Can involve – • Chemistry • Anthropology • Entomology • Botany • Toxicology • Computers
Forensic Science • Episode from Dragon Fly TV http://pbskids.org/dragonflytv/show/forensics.html Answer the questions in your handout!!!
Fingerprints • Patterns exist on human fingertips • Friction Ridges – various shapes • ID individuals • Collection- tape, powder • Criminal Investigations
Fingerprint Activity • Website for textbook • Procedure • Create 2 inch x 3 inch graphite patch on index card • Rub your index finger on graphite patch • This will be demonstrated in class by teacher • Carefully press a 2 inch piece of tape on finger to collect fingerprint • Gently peel off tape and press into onto your handout • Compare your fingerprint to examples provided and identify your pattern • Complete handout
Ticket out the Door • Turn in your handouts for the video and fingerprinting activity.
DNA Analysis Forensic Science
Daily Notes • Explain the role of DNA in organisms.
DNA • Hereditary material • DNA is different for every individual • Except for identical twins • Can be used like a fingerprint
DNA Analysis • Identification tool • Test paternity • Other family relationships • ID suspect – connect to crime scene • ID victim
Electrophoresis Lab - SAFTEY • Wear safety glasses at all times • Wear gloves at all times • Follow all procedures correctly • I will be VERY STRICT with this lab – SAFETY 1st
Procedure - Record everything • Place your gel in the electrophoresis machine • Wells should face negative electrode (Black) • Pour 400ml of buffer solution into gel • Load gel with each of the three DNA samples • Place lid with wires on electrophoresis apparatus • Plug wires into power source – DO NOT MIX COLORS • Turn on power source – use 150 volts • Run time = 35 min • Turn off power source • Disconnect wires • Teachers will assist with following analysis

DNA Analysis Forensic Science
Who are the parents? • DNA paternity test • Review genetic inheritance • 50% = Mom’s DNA • 50% = Dad’s DNA • Each group will be given a set of DNA bands • Determine which baby belongs to each couple. • Record your information on your worksheet
Issues with DNA and Forensics • Mistakes in procedure • Contaminated samples • Chimeras http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyS2CwNBABo
Ticket out the Door • On the back of your worksheet answer the following: • Is it possible for a child to have a DNA band that is not found in the mother’s DNA? Explain your answer.
