History • 1996 the government decided to digitalize the television & radio broadcasting • Why? there was a need to exploit radio frequencies better • 1997 satellite-transmitted TV Finland started Digital TV (DTV) transmissions for Finns living abroad
History • By 2000 the first step of the construction of DTV was finished, over 50% of Finns living within the broadcasting area • 2001 DTV broadcasts started in the visibilty areas of the radio and television stations. 10 stations covered 72 % of the population. 5000 receivers were sold (maybe 1 by me…)

DTV Today • 2004 second step is finished. By September DTV coverage reached 94% of population with 23 stations. • Mikkeli, Pernaja, Fiskars, Joutseno, Kerimäki, Pihtipudas, Haapavesi, Kruunupyy, Tammela, Pyhävuori, Koli and Vuokatti
DTV Today • Latest figures (Finnpanel survey Aug-Sept 2004) • 459 000 receivers are sold (19,6%) = every 5th households • highest penetration rate in Europe • 7 % of all viewers watch tv digitally
…and the future • By the end of 2006 the coverage will be 99,9% • 31.8.2007 all analog TV transmissions will end
