Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush • Wars that involved this idea: World War I, World War II, Cold War, and the War on Terror • Similar to idea of Manifest Destiny • Thomas Jefferson negotiated the Louisiana Purchase during his Presidency

  3. The Louisiana Purchase • Spain controlled Louisiana and the area left of the Mississippi River, since 1762, after getting it from France • Spain allowed America to use the Mississippi River and the New Orleans harbor to trade, in 1795 • Spain no longer allowed it in 1798

Spain secretly sold the Louisiana area to France in 1800 • They made this public in 1803 • 3 weeks later they sold the area to America • France gave up on their hope of expansion (getting more land) and sold the whole area for 15 million dollars • It was worth 233 million dollars today • It doubled the United States and cost us 3 cents an acre

What would America be like if did not buy the Louisiana Purchase? • It was one of the many land purchases the United States made to create what United States looks like today • Some people thought that it was a bad idea originally for Thomas Jefferson to buy the land • Today people feel like it was a good idea
