  1. Food Chain and Food Webs How do organisms interact with one another in a food chain/food web?

  2. In the beginning, there was a… • Producer: an organism that makes it’s own food. • Most producers make food through the process of photosynthesis. • Another word for producer is autotroph.

  3. Examples of producers: Plants Phytoplankton

  4. Where do you think most producers get the energy to make their own food? Answer: The Sun!

  5. Who eats the producers? • Consumers: an organism that has to eat to get its energy. • Another word for consumers is heterotroph.

  6. 3 types of Heterotrophs: • Herbivore: An organism who only eats plants. • Carnivore: An organism who only eats meat. • Omnivore: An organism who eats both plants and animals.

  7. What is each of these animals? Talk with your neighbor and see what they think.

  8. But wait, there’s more! • Scavengers: Animals that eat dead animals or carrion (rotting flesh). • They help break down organic material into smaller pieces.

  9. Last but not least: • Decomposers: Organisms that eat fragments of dead matter in an ecosystem. • They are also called: Detritivores • Important to an ecosystem because they return nutrients back to the air, water, and soil where they can be reused!

  10. Some examples: Bacteria Worms and Insects Fungi, like mushrooms

  11. So what are food chains? • Shows how each organism gets its energy (food). • Always starts with a producer and uses arrows to point the direction where energy is moving..

  12. A Food Web: • Shows complex feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem. • Uses multiple arrows because most organisms feed on more than one species.
