  3. Components of Literacy • Guided Reading: All Day Long! …to improve comprehension skills and vocabulary • Novels, informational texts, poetry, text books • Students are expected to read a variety of texts at home. • Word Study/Spelling • Weekly list…Test on Friday • spellingcity.com

Components of Writing • Writing Process • Pre-write, Draft, Edit, Revise, Proofread • Parent editing is welcome! • Instructional writing will not be sent home for parent editing • Microsoft Word 2010 • Writing Tasks • Personal Narrative, Persuasive, Explanatory (How to…), Expository, Comparison, Poetry

  5. New RLA Assessments • All text passages will be authentic • Some text passages may express opinions with which the reader may disagree • Text passages may be longer and more rigorous than on past tests

  6. RLA Students must… • Comprehendcomplex, grade-level texts. • Identify central themes and key text elements • Move beyond basic recall of details • make inferences • wrestle with meaningful, real-world questions • Support their text-based analysis with key details from the text, and then explain how the details support their answer. R.A.C.E.
