  2. Meet Mrs. Felice • Graduate of University of Maine at Orono • This is my 7th year at Starkey • Co-sponsor of Safety Patrol

  3. What Will Be Expected of My 5th Grade Student in Reading? This year, the state has mandated that we use a computer program named FAIR for our Reading Common Assessments. There are two parts: MAZE and Word Analysis. Students need to be above the 30th percentile in the MAZE to not receive a Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP). Students need to be above the 30th percentile in the Word Analysis as well, but will not necessarily receive a PMP if they are below.

  4. Differences in Reading Assessments • No SRI. Student lexiles are determined through the FAIR assessment. • No DIBELS (fluency). Fluency is assessed using FAIR as well. • We still have Reading Counts.

  5. What Will Be Expected of My 5th Grade Student in Writing? • Students take assessments in September, December, and April. • September and December’s prompts are narrative. April’s is either narrative or expository. • Papers are scored based on the FCAT grading rubric. • Students are expected to get a 3/4 out of 6. • The Learning Express program will not be used this year.

What Will Be Expected of My 5th Grade Student in Math? • The Math Common Assessments are based on what the students should know at that point in the year. • Assessments are given in September, December, and April. • Students are expected to score a 35/50 on each. • On a side note, basic multiplication facts are not taught.

  7. What Will Be Expected of My 5th Grader in Science? • Like the Math Common Assessment, the Science Common Assessments are based on what the students should know at that point in the year. • Assessments are given in September, December, and April. • Students are expected to score a 35/50 on each.

  8. FCAT COUNTS!!! • 5th graders are tested in Reading, Math, AND Science. • Students must continue to make gains in Reading and Math. • Students receive a Science Level 0-5 just like they do for Reading and Math. • Reading and Science FCAT are multiple choice questions. • Math FCAT includes short and extended response items as well as multiple choice.

  9. FCAT Testing Schedule • Reading, Math, and Science FCAT tests will all be administered from March 9-19, 2010. • Please do not schedule absences in the weeks prior to the FCAT.

  10. Chorus and Art Club • 5th graders are allowed to participate in either Chorus or Art Club. • Chorus and Art Club take place on Tuesdays from 1:20-2:00 P.M. • If your child participates in Chorus or Art Club, he or she will be missing Science instruction. They are responsible for making up the work that they have missed.

  11. Classroom Policies Data Folders: Your child will bring their data folder home each Friday. Graded papers will be returned in the Data Folder. PCAS and FCAT Assessment results for Reading, Math, Writing and Science will be recorded in the folder. All classroom assessments should be recorded by the student on Friday. Please sign and date the signature sheet and return the folder by Tuesday.

  13. Discipline Plan: Every student will receive one ticket when they enter the room in the morning. This ticket may be added to the Prize Bag at the end of the day. Students can earn additional tickets for great behavior at any time. During class meetings on Friday, 5 tickets will be picked. These students will receive a prize from the Prize Pal and a Homework Pass. Students who do not follow these rules will be asked to give a ticket back to Mrs. Felice. If a student continues to make inappropriate choices, they will be asked to have a 5 minute time out. The child will write a note in their planner explaining the reason for their time out. If the student’s behavior continues after a time out, the student will not be eligible for a prize on Friday and they will not participate in Free Time. At any time, Mrs. Felice may write a note in the planner, make a phone call home, or request a conference.

  14. Homework Policy: Please check and sign your child’s planner nightly to ensure timely communication between home and school. Homework is given NIGHTLY (not in a packet). Homework is due the next day. In addition to the assigned homework, students may be asked to complete assignments that were not finished within a reasonable amount of time in class. Homework passes may be used once and must be attached to the original assignment. They may not be used for lost assignments. A report card grade of E, V, S, N, or U will be assigned for homework as follows: • Missing or Late 0-2 times =E • Missing or Late 3-5 times =V • Missing or Late 6-10 times =S • Missing or Late 11-15 times =N • Missing or Late 16+ times =U • ***Please be aware that Honor Roll and Principal’s List require an E, V, or S.

  15. Late, Missing, or Corrected Work: Students will have the same number of days that they are absent to make up any missed assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to contact me for this information. All papers are sent home on Fridays in the Data Folder. Any assignment with a grade of 69% or below may be corrected and returned for an improved grade. The corrections must be done on a separate piece of paper and stapled to the original work. Any corrections must be in by the end of the following week. An APZ (Acknowledgement of Possible Zero) form will be sent home when an assignment (including homework) is not turned in on time. This gives the student ONE additional day to complete their work. The assignment will not be collected without a signed APZ form. I staple all APZ forms in the planner; please keep them attached so they are not lost. I will file the APZ form in the student’s personal file after it has been signed. Late or missing work will not be accepted.

  16. Planner • Each child has been supplied with a planner purchased by our Title-I program. • Each day, your child is to write down his or her assignment(s) for the evening plus any other work that needs to be done.

  18. How can you help? • Please send in your child’s school supplies if you have not done so already. • Class Adoptions/Business Partnerships – Flyers located on the back table • Field Trip Chaperones must register as volunteers. • Hold your child responsible for his or her homework and make-up work. • Return Data Folders as soon as possible.
