  1. Quick prison sentence

  2. On Thursday, Stacey Rambold will be released from Montana State Prison after just 31 days. Rambold admitted raping Cherice Moralez in 2008 when she was 14 while he was her teacher at her high school. Moralez took her life shortly before her 17th birthday. While out of prison, he will continue to be on probation for the next 14 years, 11 months. The case drew widespread attention when a Montana imposed a one-month sentence on Rambold and made controversial comments about the victim, saying she "seemed older than her chronological age" and she was "as much in control of the situation.“ The judge later apologized for his comments. The prosecution originally agreed to a treatment program for Rambold, but the ex-teacher fell short of the agreement and prosecutors asked the judge last month to sentence him to 20 years. The judge ruled Rambold's infractions weren't serious enough. Prosecutors have appealed the sentence.

  3. In Other News • The death toll from the strong earthquake that struck southwestern Pakistan this week has risen to 350. • Oracle Team USA pulled off one of the most impressive comebacks in sailing history, as skipper James Spithill and his crew flew across the San Francisco Bay and secured the America's Cup in a winner-take-all race in the best-of-17 series. Just a week ago, Emirates Team New Zealand led this competition 8-1 and needed just one more win to take the cup. • A collection of some of Syria's most powerful rebel brigades have rejected a Western-backed opposition group that announced the creation of an interim government in exile this month. The 13 rebel groups, led by an al Qaeda-linked group, also called on supporters of the Syrian opposition to embrace Sharia law "and make it the sole source of legislation.“ So now you have the current Syrian government responsible for chemical attacks, a rebel opposition group backed by the U.S, and now another opposition group backed by al Qaeda. • Iran's new president has acknowledged that Nazis killed Jews, furthering the stark contrast between himself and his predecessor, who called the Holocaust a "myth.“ "Any crime that happens in history against humanity, including the crime the Nazis committed towards the Jews as well as non-Jews, was reprehensible and condemnable," President Hassan Rouhani. "Whatever criminality they committed against the Jews, we condemn, because genocide, the taking of the human life, is condemnable and it makes no difference whether that life is a Jewish life, a Christian or a Muslim or what. For us it's the same."
