Match for Life is the donor recruitment operation supporting Singapore’s ONLY bone marrow donor register. Each year we target to recruit at least 5,000 new donors working with socially responsible partners who provide us with access to their staff to share more about our mission and to invite them to sign up. Why?A bone marrow transplant is becoming the preferred treatment for many of the most common forms of blood disease including leukaemia and lymphoma. However finding a match is 1 in 20,000 if the patient doesn’t have a matching sibling, so the need for donors grows every single day. How your organisation can help? Make a donation – all financial contributions are eligible for a 2.5x tax exemption Organise a donor drive in your office and help us reach out to your staff Volunteer and help spread the word about our life-saving work

  3. Organise a Donor Drive4 Easy Steps 1. Appoint a “sponsor” for the donor drive to help with the following Recruit a core team of in-company volunteers (4 -10 required depending on the staff numbers) Identify the email distribution list and any other communications tools we can leverage to inform people in advance In-house newsletters Video monitors Notice boards Send out email information to the rest of the staff 2. Set up a meeting and we will share what we need and SET A DATE A classroom or conference room to set up our info-ed banners and posters Long tables with facing chairs (6 – 10 pairs of facing seats) for BMDP volunteers to answer specific questions and to fill out registration forms Collateral table to display more information, merchandise and sign-up kits

One week BEFORE the date Distribute our e-flyer with the link to our Be the One! video Display leaflets at reception and other public areas Download our ready-to-print poster – localise with your event details – and place in public areas 4. On the Day BMDP Recruitment team will arrive – usually around 10.00 am to set up which takes around 30 minutes Volunteer briefing (just 20 minutes) on filling out the forms and basic instructions on how to collect the tissue sample, timing and labeling We recommend the drive is open for an extended lunch period – say 11.00 am – 3.00 pm to give people time to ask questions and be committed Signing up is easy –and we hope everyone who steps forward is committed to making the life-saving donation if the time comes

  5. Frequently Asked Questions What is Bone Marrow? Bone marrow is contained inside our bones. It is looks like blood except it contains stem cells which are capable of producing the body’s blood cells, platelets and white blood cells – the main components our blood. Who needs a Bone Marrow Transplant? Bone marrow transplants are used to treat patients whose bone marrow stops producing the correct amount of various blood cells. More than 60 potentially fatal diseases, including several types of leukaemia, are treated with unrelated bone marrow transplants. Do I have to pay for any expenses? All medical expenses relating to the bone marrow donation will be borne by the patient. You, as the donor, will be given medical leave for adequate rest following the donation. Throughout the whole process, you will be assigned a BMDP staff or volunteer who will be there on hand to render any assistance required. When do I become a Bone Marrow Donor? Your tissue type has to match perfectly with that of the patient’s. The odds vary widely, depending on the rarity of the patient’s tissue type. However, once you are identified as a compatible donor, you may be the only person who can provide the life-saving bone marrow to that patient. How long will I be off work or away from school? You will discuss this with the doctor during the pre-donation medical examination, but for most donors they may take 2-3 days away from their normal work or studies. After the donation process, their bone marrow replaces itself completely within 4-6 weeks
