Identification of Financially Disadvantaged Applicants • Self declared in AMCAS • Family size and income • Essay • Fee Assistance Program (FAP) approval • Family size/income ratio below 200% poverty • AAMC reduces MCAT fee to $85, apply to 13 AMCAS schools for free, our school waives supplemental application fee

  4. Identification of Environmentally Disadvantaged Applicants • Biographic data • Single versus multi-parent family • Parents living or deceased • Parents highest level of education • Secondary application asks for high school graduating class size

  5. Identification of Educationally Disadvantaged Applicants • How can applicants be identified who came from schools that afforded them an educationally disadvantaged background? • The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

  6. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 • Requires school, district, and state report cards on information in three general areas: • School improvement • Teacher qualifications in core subject areas • Test data including two-year achievement trends and student participation rates.

  7. Identification of Educationally Disadvantaged Applicants • From Mississippi report card, collect school district data for • Expenditure per pupil • Percent of students on free federal lunch program • ACT scores • Graduation rates

  8. Identification of Educationally Disadvantaged Applicants • Any of the above that is below state average = educational disadvantage • Applicants who attended MS public schools scored 0 – 4

  9. Use of Scores for Educational Disadvantages • Admissions committee decisions • Distance traveled • Selection for Summer pre-matriculation program • URMs • Financial or educational disadvantage • Selection for Professional Portal Track post-baccalaureate program
