  2. AGENDA AT EACH VENUE NISA VISION STATEMENT BARRIERS TO GOALS PRIORITY OF BARRIERS PREVENTING SKATING SUCCESS DISCUSSIONS OF INDIVIDUAL BARRIERS POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR NISA

  3. VISION STATEMENT A)NISA MISSION STATEMENT - OVERALL GOALS FOR NISA AREAS TO BE CONSIDERED IN DEVELOPING A VISION STATEMENT THAT IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROGRAMME ORGANISATIONAL WORK BY AND WITHIN NISA, ALL PARTICIPANTS (AT ANY LEVEL) MAY REACH A LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT COMMENSURATE WITH THEIR INDIVIDUAL /LIFE GOALS OF PARTICIPATION IN THE SPORT OF ICE SKATING IN THE UK

  4. VISION STATEMENT (cont’d) THAT IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE INDIVIDUAL/GROUP PROGRAMMES OF NISA THAT INDIVIDIUALLY IDENTIFIED TALENT WILL MOVE FREELY AND SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH THE VARIOUS SKATING PROGRAMMES AND LEVELS IN A SEAMLESS MANNER TO ULTIMATELY ACHIEVE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS. THAT WITH THE MORAL AND FINANCIAL AND SPORTS SPECIFIC SUPPORT AS SHALL BE IDENTIFIED, DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED BY NISA CERTAIN IDENTIFIED AND SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL COMPETITORS WILL ACHIEVE WORLD AND OLYMPIC SUCCESS

  5. COMMON THREADS THROUGHOUT THE FOCUS GROUP MEETING OPTIMISM FOR THE FUTURE WILLINGNESS TO ACHIEVE DEVELOPMENT OF GOALS INABILITY TO VERBALISE NISA’S DEVELOPMENT/TALENT PATHWAY/STRUCTURE AVAILABILITY OF WELL FORMATTED AND PRESENTED CHARTS AND PROCEDURES SEARCH FOR CENTRAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMMES, SKATE UK, TESTS, IJS, CAN ALL BE EXPLAINED IN ISOLATION AND NO-ONE LOOKING FOR PROGRAMME REVISIONS UNCERTAINTY IF SQUAD PROGRAMMES ARE ACHIEVING THEIR INTENDED OBJECTIVES

  6. BARRIERS TO GOALS In order of priority Coaching Lack of in depth knowledge of coaching technique Lack of awareness of the holistic approach to coaching No team coaching Need of outside influence to train coaches Misconceptions Lack of elite coaches

  7. BARRIERS (cont’d) Development/Talent Pathway Diagram on paper –very clear “Mind the gap”, Talent lost in the system Lack of talent ID management throughout all levels Pass the buck – no teamwork once talent identified Unclear selection criteria

  8. BARRIERS (cont’d) 3)Economic environment Rink costs Coach costs Current economic environment How to develop programmes that develop skaters that are cost effective

  9. BARRIERS (cont’d) 4) NISA Environment Who speaks for/represents/leads NISA - (lots of references to ‘they’) Rushed decisions taken in response to select groups to the detriment of overall objectives (Re-active rather than pro- active) Proactive action to define, announce and defend NISA objectives

  10. BARRIERS (Cont’d) 5) ATHLETE INFLUENCE It is accepted that NISA objectives should be judge driven (ISU) People feel that more decisions should reflect athlete coach concerns

  11. VIEWS/CONCLUSIONS 1) Governance - “is the portfolio” title correct? - current structure provides for 62 people to be involved in the governance structure but no- one knows who is responsible for decision making - 62 too many – smaller numbers a better option - Who speaks for NISA, no central influence/leadership - no interface – too few Board Directors regularly seen by the membership No clear path forward ie strategic plan Lack of accountability regarding performance of officials

  12. 2) Problems are not seen objectively - Too often reactive not proactive 3) ISU influence - Too often used as an excuse 4) Communication - A matter of urgency 5) Lack of risk throughout the Association -Everyone hides behind charts/diagrams - No-one willing to be strong and manage

  13. POSSIBLE ACTION 1)STREAMLINE GOVERNANCE TO IMPROVE EFFICIEINCY TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES 2) DEVELOP A MESSAGE/FIND A MESSENGER 3) RISK -IDENTIFY 10 YOUNG COACHES TO TRAIN AND DEVELOP AS ELITE COACHES -DEVELOP SIMPLISTIC ELITE TRAINING ENVIRONMENT -SELECT AND IDENTIFY A DEVELOPMENT GROUP OF COACHES AND SKATERS BY DISCIPLINE 4) TALENT ID PATHWAY HAS COLLAPSED - RE-ESTABLISH HOW CURRENTLY IDENTIFIED NAMES ARE GOING TO PROCEED

  14. 2009 April onwards Identify 10 coaches to attend ISU development seminars with an external international coach Berlin Pair seminar, 2 pair coaches + 2 skaters + 2 other non pair coaches to attend and return later to Oberstdorf Oberstdorf Ice Dance seminar – 2 dance coaches + skaters + 2 non dance coaches to attend All coaches attending ISU seminars commit to share knowledge gained with other UK coaches Talent ID – select 20-30 skaters to attend 2 day seminars including parents with follow up
