What is the point of this? • Use math/science to talk about the real world? OR… • Use the real world to talk about math/science?
LDC Overview • Students pose various “themes” and vote as a class • Student pairs design 5E lessons • Each pair gives a short presentation (~10 mins) about their lesson • Winning pair gets bonus points
Past Semester LDC Topics Mars Rover Life in the Universe? Mermaids 2014 Winter Olympics
A student’s perspective… • Holly Westad; Spring CI Student • Theme = 2014 Winter Olympics • Lesson Topic = Spread of contagious diseases in Winter Olympic Village
LDC Challenges/Roadblocks • Time (so much to cover in CI) • Judging • Student or instructor decided? • UCCSTeach solution = combo of both (see rubric) • Topic selection • Needs to be broad enough to inspire creativity • Be careful not to limit options within the lesson • Must be able to apply to content area
LDC: Lessons Learned • Revisit/review 5E lesson design in the context of a real lesson • Opportunity to work with teaching partner & supervisor before first teaching experience • Use the real world to talk about math and science. Not the other way around!
Next Steps & Discussion • How could you implement a LDC into your Classroom Interactions? Other UTeach courses in the program? • What suggestions or adaptations could make this LDC structure better?
