From Milk to Meat Hebrews 5:11 – 6:3
Milk and Meat • Growth is natural; lack of grow is unnatural (1 Pet. 2:2) • Nourishment is required for growth; lack of nourishment leads to death • Milk and meat (solid food) must be given at the right stage (1 Cor. 3:2; Heb. 5:12-14)
What is milk? • Milk = elementary principles (Heb. 6:1-2) • Repentance (Acts 17:30) • Faith (Heb. 11:6) • Baptisms (Mk. 7:4-5; Acts 2:38) • Laying on of hands (Acts 8:17; 13:3) • Resurrection (Jn. 5:28-29) • Eternal judgment (Mt. 25:30-46)
What is meat? • Meat = deeper principles • The readers were to be familiar with Melchizedek (Gen. 14:18) and his comparison to Christ (5:6,10-11; 6:20; 7:1,10,11;15,17) • The readers were not ready for this “meat” because they had not been growing and learning God’s word
From Milk to Meat What is necessary to move from milk to meat? • Hearing – not mentally lazy (Mt. 13:13-16) • Time (Eph. 5:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:5; 3:18) • Experience –practice (Ac. 18:24; 2 Tim. 2:15) • Use • Senses exercised - training • Discernment (Prov. 1:2-5; Phil. 1:9-10) • Determination – “this we will do” (6:3)
From Milk to Meat What happens when we don’t move from milk to meat? • We create a teacher shortage (v. 12a) • We force others to re-teach the basics; we miss out on the deeper subjects (v. 12b) • We are spiritual babes (v. 13) • We will not discern right and wrong (v. 14); we are more susceptible to sin, open to error (2 Tim. 4:3-4) and misuse of the scripture (2 Pet. 3:16-17) • We fall away (6:4-8)
From Milk to Meat • Are you growing are dying? • What are you eating? What “food” are you asking for from the teacher, the preacher or the elders? • Are you a babe/child or a man (Eph. 4:13-15; 1 Cor. 14:20)?
