What is a systematic review? • “Systematic reviews identify, describe, appraise and synthesise research evidence from individual studies” … • “they follow a strict protocol to ensure that … the original studies are appraised and synthesised in a valid way.” • “These methods minimise the risk of bias and are transparent, enabling replication.”
What are systematic reviews good for? • Systematic reviews: • avoid duplication of research • identify gaps in current knowledge • learn from the practical problems in previous research • learn from the methodological shortcomings in previous research • identify the best objectives for the new research
