Asian american studies 450 Exploration seminar 2014 • What is an “Exploration Seminar”? • Exploration Seminars are short-term study abroad programs (3-4 weeks) led by UW faculty that take place during the gap period between the end of the UW summer quarter and beginning of autumn quarter. Students will earn credit for Fall 2014. • When is the application due? • Applications are due March 1. • What type of credit will students earn? • The American Ethnic Studies department is sponsoring Asian American Studies 450: Finding Chinese American Roots (5 credits).   3. Program Director: Connie So Connie So is an immigrant from Kowloon, Hong Kong. In February 1969, her family of 8 rejoined her maternal grandparents in the United States. She grew up in Seattle’s Beacon Hill (Asian American) neighborhood, graduated from the University of Washington with B.A.s in English and Communications (1987). She received her Master’s in Public Administration from Princeton University (1989) and her Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies (emphasis Political Science) at U.C. Berkeley (2000). Since 1992, she has taught at the University of Washington’s American Ethnic Studies Department. In 2002, she became a Senior Lecturer and the Supervisor of the Department’s Community Practicum and Internship. She is currently the Vice President of OCA (formerly the Organization of Chinese Americans) – Greater Seattle and Vice President of the Seattle Chapter of the Chinese Americans in Washington State Heritage Project.

Assistant Program Director: Third Andresen • THIRD ANDRESENearned his PhD in Multicultural Education, Masters in Multicultural Education, and BA in American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington. He has been in the field of education and community organizing for 17 years. • He is the Director of CHID 472: Philippine Study Abroad Program and the Co-director of CHID 390: New Zealand Study Abroad Program, CHID 472: South Pacific Study Abroad &Community Engagement – Maori & Colonial Histories. Third’s research interest is on Asian Pacific Islander American history and culture. • Third   developed and teaches AES 360: Filipino American History and Culture, CHID 250: Hip Hop in the 206, CHID 250 B: Hollywood and the portrayal of minority groups in the motion picture industry. CHID 250 B: Hip Hop culture, tracks, and videos, CHID 260: (Re) thinking Diversity, and EDUC 401: Martinez Scholars.

  5. Hong Kong Tour Consultant: Candace Kwan Candace Kwan was born in Butte, Montana and moved to Hong Kong after second grade. She is currently a sophomore studying American Ethnic Studies (Asian American Studies) and Journalism, and jokes (too often) that studying these two disciplines allows her to "fangirl all day every day", as she has a soft spot for Asian Americans in the media (esp. musicians and YouTubers). Through her job as a columnist for South China Morning Post's Young Post, the youth division of Hong Kong's leading English newspaper, she has been able to interview a few of her role models (she still hasn't gotten over meeting Far East Movement two years ago) and write features and reviews on fluffy things like music and makeup. She has also been freelancing for ISAtv, an online blog dedicated to all things Asian American, The Daily and the International Examiner

  6. China Tour Consultant: Su-Ching Wang Su-ching Wang is an international student from Taipei, Taiwan. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from Tamkang University and her Master’s Degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. She is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of English at the University of Washington, working on her dissertation “Rethinking ‘Women’s Work’: From American Domesticity to Racial Domestics.” Her academic interests include 20th Century American literature, comparative racialization of African Americans and Asian Americans, and women of color feminism. She was a co-founder of the Asian American Studies Research Collective (2008-), a cross-disciplinary research cluster (and later a graduate student interest group) funded by the Simpson Center for the Humanities. She is also an organizing member of the Seattle Asian American Film Festival (2012-), formerly known as the Northwest Asian American Film Festival (2003-2007).

GUANGDONG PROVINCE • Guangdong/Kwangtung is an economic powerhouse in southern China, and has earned a reputation as a freewheeling province. • It is the historic province of immigrants from China to the Americas, including Taishan/Toisan, Hong Kong, Chaozhou/Teochew, Macau/Macao. • It is known as the region of merchants, where the silk trade route and sea silk route converged. • It is the site of the major fights during the first and second Opium War, Taiping Rebellion, Red Turban Rebellion and other major nationalist movements.

Among famous people from Guangdong are Bruce Lee, Ip Man, Sun Yat-Sen, Wong Fei-Hung (Iron Monkey/Drunken Master), Fong Sai-Yuk • Since 1979, more than 60,000 foreign enterprises have gone into business in Guangdong • Guangdong was also the site of three of the four special economic zones --- Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shantou • In China, Guangdong is nationally number 1 in GDP, urban population income, retail sales, exports, imports, and ownership of motorcycles and air conditioners. Hong Kong accounts for 2/3 of firms investing in the province.

  11. Hong Kong • Hong Kong has a reputation as Asia’s “World City.” It is both a Cantonese Chinese city and a former British colony. Hong Kong is a major tourism destination for China's increasingly affluent mainland population. It is an important hub in East Asia with global connections to many of the world's cities. It is a unique destination that has absorbed people and cultural influences from places as diverse as Vietnam and Vancouver. Hong Kong

  12. Guangzhou/ Canton Guangzhou/ canton (广州) , the capital of Guangdong Province, is the third biggest city in China after Beijing and Shanghai with a population of more than 12 million. Founded in 214 BC, the city has been a springboard for trading, cultural exchanges, many revolutions and reforms, and cultural home to the majority of early Chinese immigrants to the Americas.

  14. MACAU – Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. MACAU • Macau became a Portuguese colony in 1557. It was the center of the Chinese “coolie”/slave trade • Macau was leased to Portugal as a trading post but remained under Chinese authority and sovereignty. • Self administration was not achieved until the 1840s and it was subsequently transitioned into a Portuguese territory, until its return to China in 1999. • It was the last European territory in continental (on-shore) Asia. • In 1962, the government granted the Macau monopoly rights to all forms of gambling. Since then, it has become known as the Las Vegas of Asia.

  16. hAINAN • For centuries Hainan Island was part of Guangdong Province, but in 1988 the island became part of the newly created Hainan Province • Li people are the original inhabitants of Hainan. They are believed to be the descendants of the ancient Yue (Cantonese) tribes of China, who settled on the island between 7 and 27 thousand years ago • During the 1920s and 30s, Hainan was a hotbed of Communist activity. • Today, it is often regarded as the “Hawaii of Asia”

XIAMEN XIAMEN/AMOY • Xiamen and the surrounding southern Fujian countryside are the ancestral home to large communities of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, particularly Taiwan and the Philippines. • It is historically known for having the best sailors of China. • In the 19th century, Xiamen was a treaty port • In the 1980s, it is one of the 4 original Special Economic Zones opened to foreign investment and trade • In 2006, Xiamen was ranked as China's second "most suitable city for living,"as well as China's "most romantic leisure city" in 2011

  21. Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Tan KahKee. It is the first university in China to be founded by an overseas Chinese. Xiamen University has a strong team of academic and administrative staff. It is a key comprehensive university directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China.   22. Sun Yat-sen University, originally known as Guangdong University, was founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen (also called Sun Zhongshan), a great democratic revolutionary leader of the 20th century. The university is one of the leading universities in the People's Republic of China.
