Geography Shapes Egyptian Life • Mining • Mining minerals was difficult. • Copper, iron, and bronze hidden inside desert mountains in Sinai Peninsula. • Chipping minerals out of rock was miserable work. • First people to mine for turquoise. • Also mined for lapis lazuli, beautiful blue stones. Geography Shapes Egyptian Life • Fishing and hunting • Nile had fish, other wildlife. • Egyptians made rafts by binding reeds together. • Used nets and harpoons to catch fish. • One painting shows a man ready to hit fish with a hammer. • Speared hippos, crocodiles down the Nile. • Used boomerangs to knock birds from sky.
Geography Shapes Egyptian Life • Transportation and Trade • Equipped boats with sails and oars. • Rivers currents were slow, boaters used paddles to go faster. • Raised a sail on their boats when they travelled against the current. • Nile provided a lot for the Egyptians, they had surpluses. • Egypt had no money, exchanged goods that they grew or made: bartering.
