Evaluation, Accreditation & Benchmarking By Lars Lund-Thomsen & Nicolaj Veje Pedersen/U3: Quality Measurement and Benchmarking of the Research
Agenda Mindset and competencies Brief history of the U3 group Focus Areas: • Research evaluation • Accreditation • Benchmarking Questions ASB Bibliotek
Mindset and competencies Special competencies = special responsibility! Always maintain an external outlook! Competencies • Extensive knowledge of scientific publication (practice, dissemination, channels, and databases/sources) • Bibliometric know-how – methodology, theory, data collection, analysis, and not least - limitations • Communication and dissemination Sources & Tools • Commercial citation indexes – Thomson Reuters Web of Science and Elseviers Scopus • Research@asb - Internal research registration portal. The system, PURE, is developed by a small danish company based in Aalborg and is used by almost every university in Denmark. • Statistical and bibliometric analysis programs (special software and online sources (eg. Incites, SciVal Spotlight)) ASB Bibliotek
Brief history of the U3 group 2003: U3 is established. The focus is bibliometric research evaluation and the development of support services for research evaluation at the ASB. 2004: Due to the emphasis on data collection and analysis, the U3 area of responsibility is expanded to include the LibQual benchmarking . 2006 – 2008: During three years of intensive strategic work at the ASB level, U3 continues to lobby and communicate the focus area and the knowledge and competencies present in the group to the research environment and the management. 2008: A new pro-dean of research is appointed and the persistence and presence of U3 is now recognized by the management and research environment. U3 is connected to key areas of the ASB strategy. ASB Bibliotek
Focus Areas Three main areas: • Research evaluation • Accreditation • Benchmarking External outlook: U3 cannot (and will not) work independently of the research environment and the management. Close communication is crucial. ASB Bibliotek
Research evaluation Examples of internal activities Advanced level • Research Groups & Employees • Journal analysis • Co-citation analysis & Bibliometric maps • Analysis of the research process General level • Administration & Departments • Calculation of Crown Indicators. • Journal Quality Rankings. Research evaluation Examples of external collaboration The AU Group for Research Evaluation • A joint group composed of various bibliometricians and librarians within the AU working with research evaluation. • Commissioned by the the AU Library Board to solve various tasks and to serve as advisors to the Library Board and the AU Management Office • Previous tasks include work related to the Academic Ranking of World Universities and a large bibliometric evaluation of the AU by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University The bibliometric network • A national networking group composed of bibliometricians and librarians within the higher education institutions and other research institutions of Denmark. • Primarily serves as a vehicle for knowledge exchange within this particular field in Denmark. Accreditation AACSB 2009 Provide complete publication lists from relevant researchers. • Extraction from ASB research database. AACSB publication types & groups didn’t match ASB research database. • New mapping of all the publications. EQUIS 2009 No direct involvement concerning data processing ASB Bibliotek
Benchmarking ASB Benchmarking Background: • In 2009 the ASB 5-year EQUIS accreditation was renewed. It was, however, pointed out in the accreditation process and report, that the lack of systematic benchmarking activites at the ASB was considered a weakness. • A project lead by the Library & ICT Director was therefore commissoned by the management in the fall of 2009 to establish a systematic benchmarking practice at ASB. • U3 with its emphasis on data collection and analysis and benchmarking of research was an obvious choice as a support group for the project. Project process and status: • Definitions, visions & goals • Pilot project 2010: Benchmarking of executive programmes LibQual Internal & External benchmarking of the Library ASB Bibliotek
