Management Response NCAS/NASA Audit 1064/6/2010–4/8/2010 • Root Cause:It has always been the responsibility of the Cognizant Engineer at SSL to insure that the machine shop has the necessary information to correctly fabricate all parts. In addition, supplying a red-lined drawing to the shop explicitly means that the associated electronic data has not been updated to reflect the changes – that is what red-lining denotes. • However, while there has never been an incident where a part has been fabricated using out-dated CAD data, the possibility does exist that when a redlined drawing is supplied to a machinist, he could download and use the associated but not updated geometry file, leading to the part being fabricated incorrectly. 2 of 4
Management Response NCAS/NASA Audit 1064/6/2010–4/8/2010 • Action Plan:ECNs are now linked electronically to the associated CAD files in our Product Data Management System (PDMWorks). When a user goes to download a drawing or geometry file, any associated ECNs are clearly displayed, and available for review in the ECN directory under the same project: PDMWorks Tree Project Instrument Part Link to ECN ECN file Anticipated Action Plan Completion Date: Complete 3 of 4
