Questions we will be addressing • Essential question: • How does math apply to things we do everyday? • Content question: • How many numbers are on a clock • What does each hand represent on the clock? • How many days are in each month? • Unit question: • How do we tell time? • What numbers are used to tell time? • What numbers are used to count days? • How do we use a calendar?
Unit Overview • This project will teach students about clocks and time. • Students will create a clock out of a number line. Then students will take this concept and apply it to creating their own paper clocks. • We will review the minute and hour hands and what they represent. • The students will then add the arms onto the paper clock they have created. • The teacher will use the checklist to observe students’ progress throughout the activity. • Students will then play a Time-Bingo game. Students will have to identify a clock with the correct time that is being called out by the teacher. The first student to complete a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) will win the game. • Students will complete their graphic organizers about what they learned during the activities. The teacher will then collect the clocks and game boards and grade students based on their knowledge of time. The teacher will use a pre-determined rubric to grade each student.
Roles of Students, Parents, and Teachers • Students: • Making own paper clock • Making own Time-Bingo card • Teacher: • Explaining in detail how to tell time • Answering any questions students may have • Help students solve any problems with creating their projects • Parent: • Reinforcement telling time at home
Standards, Benefits and Objectives • Standards: Use vocabulary associated with the sequence of time, including words related to clocks and calendars. • Objectives: Learning about time and calendars. • Benefits: Project based learning helps students build decision making and social skills. Students also learn how to read a calendar and read a clock.
What is Project Based Learning? • Project based learning is learning through doing. It allows the students to learn concepts or ideas through hands-on experiences.
