Triple the Fun!Expanding Consortium Research Networking Activities into the Semantic Web David Eichmannco-chair Research Networking Affinity Group Institute for Clinical and Translational Science University of Iowa
The Consortium Context • SGC-3 recommended and the PIs voted to adopt the following (paraphrased): • Recommend that institutions with CTSAs adopt research networking tools supporting Linked Open Data • That these data be shared in a form compatible with the VIVO ontology • That the Research Networking Affinity Group assist institutions where feasible in achieving these goals
Why Bother? • Words in a profile are just sequences of characters carrying no meaning • With structure and relationship comes meaning, aka semantics • Enter the Semantic Web!
More… • Science • Looking through the current concepts of publication and grant to the science being done • Organizational Context • Aggregate concepts as well as the investigators that comprise them • Labs, courses, centers, …
More… • Information • We have more information available to us about our graduate students (via Facebook and Twitter) than about our (potential) colleagues and collaborators
Connecting the Dots • The real challenge here is translation of information already in existence in scattered sources • Research networking tools • Citation databases (e.g., PubMED) • Award databases (e.g., NIH Reporter) • Curated archives (e.g., GenBank) • Locked up in text (the research literature)
Linked Open Data • InformationArchitecture
Linked Open Data Appeal • Low-hanging fruit: mapping our own data • The big payoff: level 5 LOD and deep questions • “Which investigators are studying genes implicated in breast cancer?” • The inference chains that are possible: • RNS– MEDLINE – RefSeq – GenBank
Leveraging Existing Work… • “Linking Open Data cloud diagram, by Richard Cyganiak and AnjaJentzsch. http://lod-cloud.net/”
Where Next? • For the Affinity Group • Aid institutions in comprehending the many process paths to achieving the recommendations • See the adoption guide Bill Barnett has shepherded • Aid institutions in assessing the multiple options both open source and commercial for research networking systems
Where Next? • For the Affinity Group • Move into the next generation of federating search across the available systems using the VIVO ontology • This will likely occur at the grass roots as individual sites begin to innovate • Direct2Experts.org can then transition to function as a portal for this next round of tools
Where Next? • For the IKFC • Support your local institutions in the learning curve • Seize the opportunity to begin to capitalize on the value of these data by building tools that consume them • How? Get involved in the Research Networking Affinity Group!
