The difference between OLD Russian New Years and NEW Russian New Years • Russia is one of the few countries, where people celebrate the Old New Year. • Russia is not on Gregorian calendar, which is the one America has. • The Old New Year is celebrated on January 14. The old Julian calendar, the calendar which is that Russia is on, states that it’s celebrated on December 31, which means that the Old New Year is the actual New Year, just old style.
Russian superstitions connections to New Years • Clean everything in the house. A single molecule of dust threatens to make the whole year unlucky. • Wash all the clothes so that not a single worn or dirty thing is found around. Or risk a whole year in rags. • Write a wish on a piece of paper. Set the paper on fire and throw in the glass of champagne. If the champagne is drunk before the last ringing of the New Year's bell, the wish will come true.
