Remove bolt that fastens bracket (3) to flywheel housing and remove tube (2). 2. Drain the oil from the transmission. Put identification on oil lines (4) for assembly purposes. Disconnect oil lines from the relief control valve. 3. Remove two bolts and move valve assembly (5) from the transfer gear case. Fasten assembly to frame so it is not damaged when the differential is removed. 4. Remove lifting plates and install tool (A) and a hoist on the transfer gear case. Remove the bolts that fasten the transfer gear to the flywheel housing. 5. Disconnect the hose assembly from the top of the differential lock control valve. Disconnect wire (8) from the wiring harness. Loosen the nuts on bolts (9) on each side of the flywheel housing. Turn bolt (9) until they are against the frame. Tighten the nuts on the bolts. 8. Loosen nuts (10) and slide them over cables (11). Remove bolts (14). Slide retainer (12) over cables (11). 9. Remove couplings (13) from the transmission housing with a screwdriver. Lift the transmission control cables out of the notches in the links in the transmission control valves. 10. Install three 5/8"-11 NC forcing screws (15) in the differential carrier. Remove the nuts that fasten the differential carrier to the bevel gear case. (1202 kg). 12. Fasten a hoist to the differential as shown. 13. Remove nuts (19) that hold differential (18) to the transmission. 14. Remove differential (18). The weight is 650 lb. (295 kg). Install Differential NOTE: Inspect all O-ring seals and make any replacements if necessary. 1. Fasten a hoist and nylon straps to the differential as shown. 2. Put tool (A) and a hoist on the transfer gear case and install the transmission and differential assembly in position on the flywheel housing and the bevel gear case. 4. Remove tool (A) and install bracket (2) to the frame. 5. Install lifting plates (3) on the transfer gear case. 6. Loosen nuts (6) on bolts (5) on each side of the machine. Turn bolts (5) away from the frame. Tighten nuts (6). 7. Connect oil lines (4) to their correct location on the relief control valve. 8. Put cables (9) in position in the links of the transmission control valve. Push couplings (8) into position in the transmission. Tighten nuts (10) against the couplings. Install the bolts that hold retainer (7) to the transmission. 9. Put differential lock control valve (14) with O-ring seal in position on top of the differential case. Put hose assembly (12) with clip in place and install two bolts. Connect wire (13) to the wiring harness. Connect the hose from the transmission relief valve to the top of the differential lock control valve. 10. Fill the transmission with oil to its correct level. Remove lock (3) and washer (2) from the pinion shaft. 3. Install differential and bevel gear assembly in position on tool (B). The weight of the assembly is 670 lb. (304 kg). 4. Remove O-ring seal (11) from the carrier assembly. Bend the tab on locks (7) and remove bolt and lock (9) from each side of cap. 5. Remove differential assembly (13) from carrier assembly. The weight of the assembly is 350 lb. (159 kg). 8. Remove the cage (15) and nut (14) from the differential assembly as a unit. 9. Remove nut (14) and bearing cup (16) from cage (15). 10. Use tooling (C) to remove bearing cone (17) from housing assembly. 11. Put identification "X" on both halves of housing assembly (18) for installation purposes. 12. Remove bolts (31) that fasten the bevel gear (33) and housing (32) to the inner half of housing (18). Use two men to remove assembly from housing (18). The weight of the assembly is 79 lb. Use tooling (F) to remove bearing (34) from housing. 23. Use a hammer and punch to remove two dowels from housing (32). 24. Remove piston (36) from piston housing. Remove seals (35) and (37) from piston. 25. Install tooling (G) on carrier to remove pinion (42). Turn the carrier assembly over on the opposite side and use tooling (H) to remove seal. 31. Install tooling (G) on carrier and remove bearing cup (44). 32. Install tooling (J) between pinion and bearing. Install assembly in a press and remove bearing (45). NOTICE The pinion must be held to prevent damage during bearing removal. Install seal in carrier as shown with tooling (A). Heat bearing cone (4) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C) and install cone on pinion (3). 5. Put the pinion (3) in the carrier housing (5) and hold it in position with a hydraulic jack. 6. Install lock (9) and nut (8) on pinion with the chamfer side of nut down. Tighten nut finger tight. 9. Put two 1/4" dowels against the pinion splines 180° apart. 10. Check the torque needed to turn pinion shaft (any resistance to turn shaft will be caused by the carrier housing lip type seal on the pinion shaft). Note the torque reading. Remove torque wrench. 12. Install tooling (F) on nut (8). Install the torque wrench on tooling (E). Tighten nut (8) with tooling (F) to a torque of 0.8 ± 0.6 N·m (7.0 ± 5.0 lb in) more than the torque in Step 11. 13. Remove tooling (E) and (F). 14. Bend a tab on lock (9) to hold nut (8) in position on pinion shaft. 15. Install nine discs (13) and eight disc assemblies on the spacer (11) starting with a disc. 18. Install seals (14) and (16) on the inside and the outside of piston (15). Install the seals so the lips will be toward the bottom of piston housing. Put 1E0371 oil on the seal surfaces and in the piston housing bore. 19. Turn housing assembly over and put bevel gear (19) in position on the piston housing. 22. With two persons turn the bevel gear and piston housing over and install it on the inner half of housing (12). The weight of the assembly is 79 lb. (36 kg). 23. Correct Method To Make New Rings Ready For Installation NOTE: There is a correct method to make the new rings (23) ready for installation. Use your hands on each end of the ring to pull the ends several inches by each other. Figure 2. The Ends Of The Ring Must Make Contact With The Inner Notches Use care to keep the ring shape like a circle. This makes an even bend (or ring "set") all the way around the ring. When the ring is in the groove, the notches in the ends must be fully engaged with each other so the ring will not make contact with the edge of the cage bore. That is, the notches must be fully engaged and the ends must be together. Figure 3. Install nut (24) and two plastic seals (23) on cage with the joints 180° apart. 26. Install ring (25) on cage with tool (C). 27. Install cage (22) on bearing. 28. Turn assembly over and install washer (27) on the face of the piston housing. Make sure the notches in washer (27) are in alignment with the dowels in the piston housing. 29. The face of the sleeve bearing must be flush with the face of the pinion gear. 31. Install spider pinion assemblies (29) and washers (31) on spider (30). Install assembly in the inner half of housing assembly (12). Make sure the notches (Y) in the washers are on the up side. 32. Install gear (33) on the spider pinions. Put washers (32) in position on the gear. 33. Put the outer half of housing (12) in position on the inner half of housing. NOTE: The outer half of housing (12) must be put in its correct position according to the identification marks that were made when the differential was disassembled. The notches in washers (31) and (32) must be in alignment with the dowels in the outer half of housing (12). Install bolts (35) and tighten to a torque of 95 ± 5 lb.ft. (129 ± 7 N·m). 35. Heat bearing cone (34) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C), and install in position on the outer half of housing. 36. The weight of the assembly is 350 lb. (159 kg). NOTE: Make sure the hole (Z) in cage (37) is in alignment with the seal and ring (40) in the carrier housing. 39. Install pin (42) in cage. 40. Install cap (41) in position on the differential carrier. Tighten nuts to a torque of 75 lb.ft. (102 N·m). NOTE: Make sure the cap is in alignment with the hole in the cap. 41. Use tooling (G) and a strap and hoist to place the differential and bevel gear group with the axle centerline in the vertical position and the teeth of the bevel gear toward the top as shown. 43. Install tooling (H) on the carrier housing and bevel gear group (19). Check the bevel gear to pinion gear clearance (backlash) while the pinion is held stationary. Make an adjustment to nut (24) in cage (22) with a .25 x .25 in. (6.35 x 6.35 mm) steel bar until the gear clearance (backlash) between the bevel gear (19) and the pinion is .010 + .004 - .003 in. (0.25 + 0.10 - 0.08 mm). Make adjustments to nut (38) to remove end play while (backlash) adjustment to nut (24) is kept constant. 44. Tighten nut (38) to be sure the differential bearings are against their seats. Tighten nut (38) 1 to 2 notches and measure dimensions (X). Dimension (X) must change .008 ± .002 in. (0.20 ± 0.05 mm). 46. Tighten four nuts (45) to a torque of 280 ± 20 lb.ft. (380 ± 27 N·m). 47. Put locks (44) in position on the cap. Install the locks and the bolts that hold locks (44). Bend the locks against the bolts. Install the wires on studs. 48. Remove the fan belts from the pulley on the transmission oil pump. 2. Remove transmission charging inlet tube assembly (2) and differential sump scavenge inlet tube assembly (3). 3. Remove transmission scavenge inlet tube assembly (4) and transmission and differential sump scavenge outlet tube assembly (5). 4. Remove pulley (6) from the transmission oil and scavenge pump. Remove bolts (7) that fasten plate (8) to the radiator assembly. The plate can not be removed because of the location of a wiring harness. The weight of the pump is 75 lb. (34 kg). Install Transmission Oil And Scavenge Pump 1. With two persons install transmission oil and scavenge pump (1) in position on the transmission. 2. Install pulley (2) on pump coupling. Install plate (3) on the radiator assembly. 3. Inspect all O-ring seals and make replacements if needed. 4. With the use of a Borroughs Gauge No. BT-33-72C measure the belt tension of the belt farthest from the engine block. The gauge reading should be 120 ± 5 lb. (534 ± 22 N). Used belt readings should be 90 ± 10 lb. (400 ± 44 N). 8. Tighten bolts (9). Disassemble Transmission Oil And Scavenge Pump START BY: a) remove transmission oil and scavenge pump 1.
