  2. Practice writing prompt: • Think of an insect that you dislike and explain why. Make sure to give good reasons and examples to support your choice.

  3. 1. Choose one insect Mosquitoes

  4. 2. List three reasons • Annoying when I’m outside • Their bites itch • They carry diseases (West Nile Virus)

  5. 3. Each reason is a paragraph • The paragraphs must be about ONE reason each!! Stick to the topic!

  6. Examples explain each reason.

  7. Use your subject and your reasons to construct your introduction and your conclusion.

  8. Example of good body paragraph: • One reason that I hate mosquitoes is because they are so annoying when I am outside. For example, when I run in the evenings, they swarm all over my face and get in my eyes. Also, when we have cookouts, we have to use bug spray. The bug spray sometimes gets in the food, and tastes horrible! Then, if you don’t use the bug spray, the only other way to not get bitten is to wear long sleeves. Yet, who wants to wear long sleeves when it’s hot outside? Nothing ruins a beautiful day like bloodsucking mosquitoes.

  9. Introductions for expository writings • You want to let the reader know what you are writing about • You want to capture or “hook” the reader’s attention

  10. Introduction DON’TS • DO NOT introduce yourself as the author • DO NOT begin with “I am going to tell you about………….AAAGHHHHHH!!!!

  11. Introduction DO’S • 1st Sentence: State your subject • 2nd Sentence: Tell how you feel about the subject • 3rd Sentence: State your three reasons

  12. Model of expository introduction • I am actually an animal lover - most animals! However, an animal , or rather an insect that I really dislike is the mosquito! I spend a great deal of time outside, and mosquitoes annoy me terribly when I am outdoors. The itch from mosquito bites can be irritating and sometimes painful. However, the irritation is just the beginning! Mosquitoes carry disease such as malaria and West Nile Virus.

  13. Conclusions for expository writings • 1st Sentence: Restate your subject • 2nd Sentence: Restate your reasons • 3rd Sentence: State a sentence about the future of your subject

  14. Model of expository conclusion • As much as I respect living things – I just don’t like mosquitoes! Those little annoying insects prevent me from enjoying the outdoors, bite me, and carry the possibility of infecting me with deadly diseases. Perhaps there is a young inventor working on a full-proof, fragrance-free bug repellant even as I write this. I certainly hope so!
