  1. Lesson Twenty Integrated Concepts • Mathematics: geometry • Visual Art: texture, shape, line, space • Language Arts: setting, descriptive language, oral language

  2. Imagine that you are actually standing on this street looking at these houses. What do you notice? What can you imagine you might hear or smell in this community?

  3. How many houses can you find in this picture? What evidence can you point out that might tell the location of this neighborhood?

  4. What two dimensional shapes can you identify in the painting? What three dimensional shapes can you point out?

  5. Can you tell where the light is coming from by looking at the shadows? What shapes do you see that are repeated to create a pattern in this picture?

  6. Here is another painting that shows several homes. Imagine that you are standing in this neighborhood. Are you looking down or up at the houses? How can you tell? What clues can you find that help us know the location of this site? Would you hear and smell the same things in this neighborhood as in the first one? Explain your answer.

  7. What shapes do you notice in this painting? What would you say about the lines in this composition? What colors can you see? What do you notice about the colors? What details can you see? Is there evidence to tell what materials these houses are made from? Explain.

  8. What do you notice when you compare and contrast these paintings? Look carefully at color, texture, shape, and line.

  9. Why do you think neither artist chose to show any people or animals these paintings? What kind of story could you write to explain why there are no people in sight? Do you think you would like to visit either of these locations? Why or why not?
