Background • Request for help from Japan • Suggestions for picture books from other countries to use as a tool for understanding • CYA section committee developed project idea • Get librarians nominating favourite books from their country • IFLA Literacy & Reading section and IBBY also involved
Aims of Project • Create a list of picture books from around the world recommended by librarians • Can be used • Celebrate and promote languages, cultures and quality of children’s books • As a stock selection tool • By Sister Libraries
Criteria for inclusion • 10 favourite titles from each country • Suitable for any age between 0 – 11 • ‘classics’ - lasting the test of time • Representing ‘quality’ • First published in country submitting • In the original language
Criteria for inclusion • High standard and quality of publishing • Text & illustrations work together well • Excellent for reading aloud to children • Reflects a positive message • In print – available for purchase
Information Required • How were the books chosen – who involved • Name of author & illustrator • Title – original language and English • Publisher, date of publication & ISBN • Brief review in English & language of the country
Country Participation • Each country organised the selection of their titles in the best way for them • Articles and press to raise awareness • National Library Associations involved • Nominations & voting across the country • Online voting • Small group of librarians
