  3. Overview To address the dramatically changing landscape of education in the 21st century, which includes advances in technology, in new research on the science of learning, and in the emergence of a private education sector, the JHU School of Education has established an innovative and dynamic distance education option for its existing Doctor of Education (EdD) degree program.

  4. Program Objective The distance education option is designed to prepare an exceptional corps of educational leaders, both nationally and internationally, who can set a high standard for leadership in education and are equipped to meet the myriad challenges associated with improving K-12 learning outcomes in both public and private educational environments.

Students will demonstrate mastery of competencies in these written and oral comprehensive assessments, which will serve as indicators of readiness for conducting applied research.

  11. Applied Dissertation The applied dissertation is the final and most significant requirement for the EdD degree. Characteristics of the applied dissertation that make it unique to this program include: Culmination of independently completed, but closely interrelated, projects. Projects are embedded within coursework and distributed across three years. Projects focus on a problem of practice within the organization with which the candidate is affiliated. Projects possess potential for significant change or impact within the organization or have implications for policy.

  12. Residencies The program includes two on-campus residencies. The first at the end of the first year (may be completed electronically from a distance). The second at the end of the third year, which will serve as the program’s culmination during which students will defend their dissertation orally. These residencies will allow face-to-face interactions with faculty and other students, as well as time for the oral defense and other activities related to the applied dissertation.
