Question • How did the NVA and Vietcong offensive during the early months of 1968 affect U.S. policymaking towards the American involvement in the Vietnam War?
Why? • The Vietnam War holds an interesting place in history. • Longest war until recently. • Similarities to today’s war. • Also has a vague withdrawal.
Works Consulted • “America’s Longest War” – George C. Herring • “Major Problem’s of the Vietnam War” – Robert J. McMahon • “Vietnam: Anthology and Guide to a Television History” – Steven Cohen • “Patriots” – Christian G. Appy
Points • Massive public relations campaign before Tet painted a picture of progress. • Administration follows the media’s reporting of the situation. • Johnson’s Wise Men make inquiries to real progress made.
Conclusion • The Tet Offensive was a major surprise whose effect could be felt throughout the upper echelons of Washington. Johnson’s administration was forced to take a hard look at the current state in Vietnam and came to the conclusion that their current path would only lead to a prolonged stalemate. The only two options were dramatic escalation, or de-escalation until an eventual withdraw.
