  2. Plot 1 :Summary • Hagar reluctantly entertains Mr. Troy. • She feels ill - suffers from constipation • after he leaves, she realizes the purpose of the trip - to convince her to go to a nursing home • She then makes a decision to never go to a “home” • Hagar and Doris both quarrel about the home. Marvin changes the subject- he appears to be “caught in the middle”. Hagar gets upset when they suggest that they get a “babysitter’ so they can go to a movie. • Hagar is getting forgetful - left a cigarette burning the night before and it fell out of the ashtray. • Marvin tells Hagar that she is getting: too much work for Doris, too heavy, too many disturbed nights. She even wets the bed.

  3. Plot 1 Continued • The issue is postponed when Hagar starts to cry. • During the night she finds sleep difficult and knocks over a lamp. • She sees herself in a mirror and sees herself for what she is, “a sight for sore eyes”. • They had both married for the qualities in each other that they now can’t bear : he for her manners and speech, she for his roughness and non-caring attitude. • She considers her relationship with him: “his banner over me was love”.

  4. Plot 2 • hagar goes to a “finishing school” for 2 years - ladies only • Her father disapproves of her desire to teach - beneath her - she can work on his accounts instead. • 3 years later she meets Bram Shipley - rough, coarse, and according to Lottie “as common as dirt”. • Matt has married Mavis McVitie and the house was given to them. • hagar married Bram, but neither Matt nor her father would attend the wedding. She believed that they would change their view when he became a prosperous gentleman.

  5. Plot 2 - Continued • Bram then initiated her into the sexual world. The next day she scrubbed for the first time. • Matt dies and even then her father doesn’t make up with her. • Her father dies of a stroke - no reconciliation - he leaves the entire estate to the town except the contents of the house. hagar takes the oaken armchair. • hagar is upset about the will, not for herself, but it would have allowed her son, John, to go to college. Instead Mr. Currie’s money was spent on a memorial Park

  6. Plot 2 - Continued • hagar remembers Bram’s uncouth mouth and behavior; his response to the Glee club; the Messiah and in the lingerie department. • He never cared what her father thought of him.
