Early 1952 • Drawing an armistice line at battle locations close to the original 38th parallel • Create a DMZ Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission would supervise armistice • Sticking point…what to do with the POWs
POW Issue • China and North Korea wants the immediate and forced return of the POWs • U.S. and South Korea wanted voluntary return of the POWs
War Continues • U.S. uses fighting to put pressure on North Korea and China • U.S. wants to keep up their aggression against Communism
New Leaders • Eisenhower becomes President -more aggressive and not afraid to use nuclear weapons to end the war • Stalin dies -Soviets and Chinese want the war to end
Operation “Little Switch” • North Korea and China agree to the U.S. and South Korea’s request to exchange sick and wounded POWs • Almost 7,000 soldiers returned to either sides

The Tunnels • Four tunnels dug by North Korea have been found • Third tunnel you can tour • Fourth tunnel could have about 30,000 armed men pass through in an hour
Impact • DMZ is a war zone governed equally by both sides • It is here that most violations of the armistice have occurred. • Increased military presence on either side of the DMZ • Build up of propaganda on either side
